Air compressor oil

Does anybody know if vacuum pump oil is fit to use in an air compressor?

Mine has been running for the last 4 or 5 years on ATF with no problems. It was put in temporary until I could get the proper oil but got forgotten until I read this post. Don't think I will bother now.

Engine oil would be the best get you out of jail card really but still not ideal. After all it’s only a piston, crank, bearing and a bush! If you’re not changing it annually use engine oil to flush it out few tines before filling up with correct oil. We’ve got a twin pump setup one at work and I change the oil every September. It still ruined a small end bush about 5 yrs ago!!!

Mostly because it relies on splash lubrication rather than forced.
