Air Line

Hi all, I need to ask the forum opinion on Air hoses.

I am thinking that I ought to invest in some new ones for the workshop but there is a bewildering array of options. Rubber, PVC, nitrile, etc.

If I want to run a few air tools 1/2" impact, die grinder and maybe spray the odd thing what bore do people recommend?

Which type of fittings? PCL?

Also is it better to buy a reel of tube and put hose tails and jubilee clips on or get the crimped on type?

Thanks for input.

Wouldnt mind a link to a nice hi viz or coloured hose. Just a plane old hose 10mm bore no fance reel. but one that's not all rigid in the cold🙈

I up graded to PCL black 1/2" hose and PCL 100 couplings for my 1/2" air ratchet.

Even with 1/2" hose there is still a constriction in the ferrules of the hose to 7/8/9mm.

So I think the PCL 100's at £20-30 a female coupling are a waste of money.

I would recomend 1/2" hose and PCL XF couplings.

Last year I got sick of old pcl couplings leaking so binned the lot and started from scratch with a couple of pcl 100 for the 3/4 and inch windy guns.then everything else got pcl xf fittings. The xf were cheapest from screwfix .It's given our windy guns a lot more power and I the compressor isn't running half as much

i dont use air tools other than a little die grinder, (got a cordless one of them now anyway!) its mostly just a blow gun to clean stuff off or pump a tyre up.

Nope take that back 17.99 for shipping WTF.
I make out they do that just to suck you in.
youd see it on the bay too, be a cheap enough price on the outside but as soon as you get there and add the shipping its a few quid dearer than the other one you looked at that seemed dearer but has free shipping.

and then you get crowds like you linked to with pipe dreams on shipping charges.

i wonder how many they actually catch on the follow through of buying it.
shurley folk arent that stupid to pay that kind of money on postage unless you cant get it anywhere else.

I have two quite expensive super flex hoses here by two different brands.
both claim to be the best of the best (in different years) at laying flat on the ground.
well let me tell you, they are no good at that trick, they are better than a stiff hose but no way do they hug the ground over the whole lth unless you have it stretched out flat..

so what ill say, is to buy Any one of the flexi hoses because from what i see they are all pretty much the same , they are a softer hose to work with than some of the stiffer ones and will lay down better no doubt but not fully.

as for air fittings, i clamp the fittings onto the pipe with O clamps, a ring with two ears of the correct size which you clamp with pliers, its a permanent fixing so it needs to be cut off to get it off but is a tidy clamp on a hose.

i use a stabuli connector here, designed to release the air pressure first before ejecting the hose but they are mental money so a non runner for most.
ive used the pcl before that, the vertex version, they have a collar on the end so if your dragging the hose on the floor it has less of a chance of blowing off the fitting just.
42cfm odd iirc.

whats no harm either is th have a short whip hose on your air tool 600mm long or so, it leaves it less bulky and with the likes of an air hammer it saves the fitting.
