All things Dairy

I just supply labour there.I can see on the computer in the farm office where the milk is going.

I try my best to get clean milk into the tank and i fail by a click of someones finger when the milk gets diverted.

So another one of my farms this morning said to me we have had the best average bactoscans and cell counts this last 3 months from the dairy we supply, according to the newsletter they sent out to their suppliers.
The thing that would scare me would be if for instance the supplier lost a supermarket contract and needed to reduce milk input by 25% which farmer are they going to get rid of first!

Theres not exactly milk contracts being thrown about

Could you run the high yeilders through the parlour for a third time? Not milking them just feeding them extra cake, would mean a lot of extra work and you would need a separate group but you could see if it's worth feeding the extra cake or not before investing capital on something that you arent sure is worth it?
no, we will probably feed max cake in parlour, quite like the idea of some really high yielders, but that's not quite how we want to run the dairy, Puts a stop to one claim though, those saying xb's don't milk, they can, and some of their sires are LIC bulls, just really surprised us, look just like nice xb's, blackish, and black feet !

I know of a mainly Spring calving herd that keeps 10-15% as an Autumn block. They go out all together during the day and at night the Autumn calvers are drafted into the shed. They come into the parlour first in the morning so they can have a double dose of cake (flat rate feeding).

We can feed to yield in our parlour so I have separate feed curves for the spring and the Autumn calvers.

A bit like this? Brown Swiss crosses. First out to the field first in!

After culling one of the last Brown Swiss cows a few weeks back, I think I need to get some more Brown Swiss blood into these cows. As soon as the gate was opened there would be a sprint to the parlour, now it's just a gentle plod, it's the same on the way back out the the fields :sleep::sleep:

Ha ha I thought I was being clever but that's not what you're looking for is it. Been a long day, finally finished our silage today and it's been a long drawn out drama and I have a sick cow and a very poorly weaned calf that I need to go check on again once the small people have gone to bed 😊
