Prevention applications do not get recorded on the 360 matrix. I guess if she's not wobbly its prevention. I was over the threshold for milk fever but upon inspection we found all prevention was being inserted as treatment which made the difference of being over or under the threshold.
So prophylactic treatment is OK, but only treating, over a certain number, is seen as a black mark?

I think he means you can't keep a bottle in the shelf, as in if you have a poorly cow or calf etc you have to get the vet out and prescribe 10ml of penstrep for the animal in question?
we may think our standards are world beating, in some nordic countries, only vets are allowed to administer anti-biotics. In some ways, our record keeping is rather lax, compared to some ! One of the 'big' boasts of the N/Red, is the detailed records kept, between farmer, breeding centre and vets. I really don't think we have to much to complain about, just pray the deluded zealots don't get it in their sights.

Trouble is. Is that why their cows have so few lactations ?

Trouble is. Is that why their cows have so few lactations ?
and yet, they are widely peddled over here, as the 'ideal' cross, along with many other breeds, but if they are so good as a cross, over our cows here, why do so few actually cross their cows ?
We have all sorts of crosses here, some are great, and some are crap, some even go as sucklers to a friend, best place for them.
Temperament, luck of the draw really, the old proper fr, could be some miserable bitches, one bull heavily promoted around here, horwood emporer 25th, produced hfrs that were pure evil, kept the chat going at skittles for 2 years, l doubt many ever made 3rd lac, a lot never made 2.
Each breed has it's good and bad points, over here, it would seem the hol took a wrong turn, and some sort of remedial action became necessary, so xing with other breeds, was the 'solution', previous farmers spent decades breeding up cattle, to a 'pure breed', 20 yrs of xing, have undone that, l think we need to concentrate on breeding the bad bits out of our pure breeds, to get a decent cow back again, with genomics, a huge gene pool, shouldn't be difficult.
As for price, with the desire for xing, no wonder they are expensive, everyone is chasing top end bulls ! Little difference to hols or fr over here. The standard of record keeping, is a lot more extensive, than over here, but probably only because of a joined up system, where farmers, breeders and vets, all interlock, something we don't really do here.
