All things Dairy

Bugger all of my heifer calves go on the 18 dairy cake from about 50 days. It's the easiest bulk solution to use. Gives them a quality cake that can be fed a little less of. I could buy a separate bin but the rearerr cake isn't that much cheaper so would take years to payback.
They all look very well.
We do similar, heifer calves are on the dairy cake - high fibre 18% from their first week (& straw)

Main reason I don't feed dairy cake is because its up the cake loft and carrying buckets up and down a ladder isn't fun, but the other reason is if something like urea or megalac etc is added and someone feeds the calves like normal without thinking about it because it's second nature

Is it just me who hates Gregory transport with a bloody passion?
no, changed contracts, different collection firm, makes you realise how bad they were. Had absolutely no hassle, any changes to route/time, told in advance. Gregory's were rather different, how different, sat here trying to remember firms name, partly age thing, and partly never having had a problem. The only thing we have rung them up for, was when it took us 5.5 hrs, to get back from exeter mkt, and milk wouldn't be ready - ok, pick you up later.

They're only dropping off calf powder but they're beyond f**king useless, no communication from them, head office told the delivery driver he wouldn't fit down our lane (he would have fit easily - had a lorry and drag of straw fit no problem last week) but refused to drive down so had to unload on a layby which has taken 2 hours for me to sort out because I've had to walk back and forth to get the tractor and trailer and telehandler as dad had a dentist appointment - if they had been on time he would have been around but of course they were 2 hours late and didn't bother ringing

Wish I bloody sent them away again tbh

we have a lane, that appears on the maps, as a quick way to get to us. Plenty of signs saying they can't, and they can't. Each firm is told, all delivery notes, say ring before delivery, narrow lane, and all firms told, if their lorry tries it, do not ring us, because we don't want to know, helped out so many over the years, with nothing to show for it. Surprising how many still try, you can now get a big van through. Once stuck, on the 'worst' bit for lorries, they cannot get out the cab, banks to high ! Artics can't get that far, they get stuck on the 90 degree bends, need full recovery vehicle to get them out.

Why not stick a bollard at the entrance to the line to stock big vehicles entering?

they ignore it, trouble is, it starts with a massive bridge, under the main road, and looks fine, so they try it, first .5 miles are ok, just narrow, so no problem, then they hit the first 90 degree, and our committed, the second fudges them, impossible to reverse. Only 1 artic made the 3rd dogleg, long tom full of milk, took 2 days to get it out. Lorries struggle through those, and get wedged between the banks, on a steep hill, and unable to get out the cab.
