All things Dairy

How much concentrate are people budgeting for average peak of 31litres 3.5protein 4.5 butterfat?
Attempting to do some budgeting for going forward ….
We will feed 6kg and achieve 24l @ 5% and 4%
Self feed silage, which I guess will mean 1kg of that cake is offsetting self starvation

All down to making some 11.8+ 15% protien silage. Cut last day of April and every 28 days there after. The idea of bulk to dilute machinery and fert costs is attractive, but its a long winter if you've crap forage

How did the stuff turn out that you cut may 10th ish time?
We’ve had a really late spring here and won’t be cutting until about the 12th of may this year. In theory all before average heading dates

Definitely not that long.

I topped my bin up in January because of a price rise in February. There was still some December cake under this in the bin and by early March the whole lot was mouldy and I had to bin it. It may have been a bad load that was delivered hot? I'll never know but it caused a lot of problems.
What would you think about adding a high protein cake when clamping down the crimp pit in July, mixing maby 1t of cake to 4t of crimp? Only other option I can think of to store Protien really.

What are most people using to put out temp. electric fence polywire? Just by hand with geared reel? Or from the quad bike?

Got some 300m long strip grazed breaks, gets a but tedious with the walking for 2 breaks a day... #lazy

Clip insulated end of Zammr handle onto electric fence, drive down field holding reel, clip reel onto fence or tree or bush at the other side of the break, tension up, turn around, stick posts in from box on back of quad, get to start, clip metal part of Zammr to the electric fence, job done. Use solar fencers where we don’t have mains electric fences. Takes about 5 minutes to put fence up, max.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
