We use mint teat for the udder, works really well. It is especially good for massaging if they get mastitis. Here are some pics of the buff out at grass, all that going into lovely milk.....

Anyone feeding yoghurt or Kefir to calves?

I'm quite keen to try it, having heard good things in the past and currently have a batch brewing. I'm planning on making a 205l drum teat feeder for it.

I give mine some yogurt in their milk when younger, to help build good bacteria in the gut. Also I'd a calf hasn't had adequate colostrum you can add yogurt to their milk to help the good, essential bacteria to build in their gut :) there was an organic farm my brother used to work on who regularly put yogurt in the milk for the calves.

There is no replacement for colostrum. "Good" bacteria can't replicate the immune and growth factors transferred from the mother through colostrum.

No ik that, it can however help the bacteria within the gut along in the calf/lambs first few days. I would not recommend it as a replacer to colostrum, if you can get hold of colostrum for the calf then by all means use that, however yogurt can be used as an alternative if there is none to be had.

This is the next one to calve. See how dipped the backend of the animal is and she has slackened off too. Her bag isn't as tight or big as it needs to be, but it will happen within the next day. Buffalo can seriously bag up overnight/matter of hrs :) guesses to what the gender will be guys? ;) I am thinking bull, prolly be wrong :D based on her last calvings ofc last one was female, only animals in the herd are a mother and daughter who have given nought but females, so far that is.

But it's not an alternative. If you have no colostrum for the calf you have harmed that calf for life. Youghurt isn't going to fix that. There is really no alternative to colostrum, that's why any farmer should have some spare on hand.
