Your on 49.5p.....can't be as bad as last winter for you?
What milk your cows doing?
No def better than last winter financially but TAD is tiring, but bills definitely growing (£50 hour for tractor&tanker feels like only yesterday was mid £30!)
Have ai 85% of cows in first 21 days of serving & this morning only 6 cows left unserved so pleased with that, cows would be early 20l which includes a lot of heifers. They peaked well but we couldn’t maintain it.
We are making money but all dairy farming in this weather is tiring😴

my hiefer shed 😭 turned into a lake this past week, heifers have been moved to the other side as an emergency but not ideal, water just pouring out all the time now 😭View attachment 1155398View attachment 1155399View attachment 1155400
we have had the water refill our lagoon 3 times this year, run off the hills. hopefully cured it from happening again, dug 2 new ditches, cleaned out, and deepened two more.

My flood was 4/6 ins deep in the calf shed, hfr straw yard was turned into slurry, and got under the home mix, and a pond reappeared in the middle of the shed, where there was no concrete.

water is pouring into the dirty water tanks, found the cause, when the above shed was built, back in the 70's, they drained the 'wet spot' that had been a pond, into the main farm drain :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

to be fair, hasn't really caused a problem before, not even in may. Dug a big pond to catch any farm run off, years ago, currently thinking of setting up a reed bed between tank and pond. Digging up the drain, would entail a lot of concrete coming up, and would need a dog leg bend, so will go with the cheaper option.

@Jdunn55 can you dig a ditch behind your buildings, to divert the water, very cheap and effective solution, flooding anywhere is a bugger.

the last time we had anything like this year, farrowing house was 6ins deep, piglets were swimming. Punched a hole through a biggish bank, and drained it, and received a bollocking from OM, for using the tractor bucket, he saw the bank, before the shed. Never lost a piglet though, plus the shed had a good wash.

but we all get disasters, its the ability to work out a quick solution that's the key, and l always reckon they come in 3's. so once we have 1, looking for 2&3, then relax abit.

How's your stream/spring doing? You've been yapping this past two years about it not running . Is it flowing to your satisfaction yet?

not really,
the only reason l can think of, is that in the may flood it completely 'cleaned' itself out, so no restriction on flow.

but, the EA claim that 'dredged' rivers don't remove the water faster from heavy rain, or that's what they 'claim' on the som levels !

lots of springs running, even a few new ones on me, so l reckon we have had enough rain for a while ! If the doom mongers are correct about climate change, we will have to get used to wet winters, and drier summers !

and glad all our cattle are housed, seen a few out, in a sea of mud.

Do other people find they need to replace batteries on solar fencer units after 2-3 years use? Iv put them on battery charger but not lasting long at all. Seam quite hard to source replacements
