Antibiotic failure

Correct @farmer on a bike the problem is that the automatic screening at nml is more sensitive than the best lab technician!
(let alone farmer using either test system )
This effectively renders on farm testing as useless, unless we all use the same state of the art kit as nml do. Even milk processors find it too expensive to purchase this equipment.
So what chance do we as farmers have?

That is not correct, it is only an electronic eye, It is used so the result is always measured the same and does not vary due to different people giving different interpretations at the limit. It is just about being sure every sample is treated the same. As farmers we have to err on the cautious side when reading the test. If that is the issue you have to be certain you are not being over optimistic reading your own test. It sounds like you have been misled by someone over this.

I am correct !!
Bit of a disclaimer "error on the cautious side" so what you are actually saying is that if you have to run a test, erroring on the cautious side means chuck the milk anyway, because if you have to run an on farm test or a test done in a lab by a fully trained technician the result could be different than the payment test done by nml !
Bit of a double standard don't you think ?
And certainly makes a mockery of contracts that demand you have an on farm test kit, which isn't fit for purpose.

I am beginning to think you have never used a Delvo test. It relies on a colour change from purple to a straw colour. If it is straw coloured it is a pass, but if there is any sign of purple it is marginal, the photos that come with the testing kit are pretty clear in advising where the level of colour change should still be just OK, but I work on the cautious side of that.

As part of my role in Arla I have been shown round the NML lab and I have also taken advice from Tim Hampton who is one of the leading experts on milk quality and milk quality testing in Europe.

Why should there be as long as farmers abide by the law on withdrawal periods?

Sorry missed this reply, sounds like people are having cows milk fail a Delvo test after the withdrawal period, wonder how it would stand in court if someone has adhered to manufacturers withdrawal period yet had someone have a reaction to penicillin residues from raw milk.

...which is why many dairies recommend testing every treated cow before she goes back in the tank. If it fails, keep it out. We had one, once which failed delvo for about 2 weeks after the statutory withdrawal period, we kept her out throughout. It's just not worth the risk.

At a recent farm event the topic was drying off.The advice was to be careful not to accidently double tube a quarter as it could extend the withhold period by several weeks (up to 100 days ). Cepravin was reckoned to be worst offender.
