Any recommendations for a handheld auger

I was looking at this BT 131 Petrol Earth Auger. Seems pricey. Looking to drill some holes to plant walnut saplings. The soil where I am is soft due to rain, can use a shovel to dig one too, so was thinking of starting to drill some holes and plant some saplings.

Any recommendations ? Any reviews ? All is welcome.

I wouldn't bore holes for saplings, you want a cross for bare root or a square hole for saplings with soul on the roots.

If the ground is soft then a steel bar works well to make the hole if the sapling roots are small enough. An alternative is a tree planting spade which is longer and narrower than a normal one. Something like this.https://www.treemarker.co.uk/tree-planting/tree-planting-spades/category/tree-planting-spades

If these are small bare root up to 18 inch, then you can easily get away with a bulb planting auger or bigger a landscaping auger. Saves me hours of hard work in the garden. Some are even suitable for pot grown.
Youn will struggle to kill walnut saplings damn things grow all over my garden thanks to the squirrels and my neighbours tree

Hyundai. Bought one in spring to do the same thing. Brilliant thing for the job if you haven’t that many stones, stone can get stuck in auger flights and it’s a workout to keep hold of it them. Starts better than all our Stihl & Husky stuff as well!

You can hire them . We used a stihl and if you hit a stone and the engine started spinning when the handle touched your leg it stopped the drive . They are a really useful machine

We borrowed one without the safety cut out - which we didn't find out until we were both horizontal going round with our legs sticking out. It did have a 12 inch auger on it though.

Spade better for planting imho, better soil to root contact, easy to leave air pockets down a drilled hole and to break roots as you try to pack the dirt back in. We have done thousands.

I got one of the cheap Chinese ones on ebay for £150.
I have planted hundreds of hawthorn plants with it and it does a good job. It leaves a lot of fine loose soil which is good for backfilling around the roots. Don't use it in long grass because it just wraps around the auger and stops it working.
It is just beginning to smoke a bit now so I would maybe get a Hyundai one mentioned above if I was going to replace it.
