Applying for jobs and age

Finding anyone here with a remote clue is like finding hens teeth. I’ve tried a handful of workers over the years and found only one young lad that was worth keeping and now have a retired guy that’s comes in at busy times that’s reliable. So in my experience age has nothing to do with work ethic or common sense. Lots are looking for a job but don’t want the work involved.

Does age affect job applicants ,I know it shouldn't but when looking through CVs does it have change your choice of applicant ?? Thanks

I would suspect it depends on the job.

At 60, I don't milk because I can't. I would be too slow and bog the job down. Similarly, I don't drive a tractor unless forced to but I do sit on a skid steer and push sh!t about. I've found my level

They don't in general put DOB on CVs now. But its easy to work backwards from their latest job to work out how old they are.
In general though, if you're good enough you're old enough.

Indeed.
Confess to wondering - in the past - if I should make myself younger to avoid being binned. Could an employer sack you retrospectively post hiring if they found you were 5 years older than implied?
If your doing the job good enough then I’d see no reason to even question an employee over their age. Personally preference is for older drivers of equipment, they’ve lost the boy racer ego and are more concerned with proving how good of a job they can do. Also can be a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Wouldn't happen. As part of your employment (if employed) your personal details would be required including your DOB.

If you couldn't give a great reason for the wrong age on the application, you would not continue with the employment for misleading your potential employer.

Again, you should not be requested to put your DOB on a CV, or be asked for it at interview.

If you apply for a job, the requirements of the position should be listed on the advert, it is assumed that you can fulfill those as you have applied, and can be challenged at interview on why you think you can.

Your potential employer should have a criteria you should meet, and if several meet that criteria, it is your potential employers personal choice who he/she makes a job offer to.

Presumably you’d have to show them your driving licence when you started, which would give the game away?

If I found out someone had been fibbing about their age at that stage, I’d wonder what else they were being dishonest about and they probably wouldn’t finish their trial.

Thanks, understand that
Just felt that if you're on the wrong side of say, 50, then theres a stronger possibility of not getting to interview stage.
Appreciate the job market has shifted since the advent of Covid!

To be fair, I think it maybe an issue for many over 50. To inform the revenue of your employment, if you are paye, they need your DOB, however on a positive, if a potential employer actually does any research in advance, they will find you are from the most productive age group.
