I don't have any answers, that's why I asked if an auto can be driven off road in 2wd at low speed and low revs, and nobody has said yeah or ney!

Well, yes and no. I've a d-max auto and it can be driven in 2wd off road at low revs. So the answer would be yes but there are a couple of big variables. First is 'off road' covers a broad range of terrain. Secondly I suspect not auto's will set up the same as say my d-max. There is a third variable - the driver

Best thing is to try a few autos and see what you think. Personally can't see myself going back to a manual but each to their own.

I've a auto Hilux, just the old model with the 5 speed box.
I love the truck, but its a love/ hate thing with the auto box. Its superb for shunting and reversing the stock trailer, more so if loaded, jumping in, pull it to D, and off you go is great also.
But its always feels in the wrong gear to my mind when on the road, top is too high for a lot of roads hereabouts and its determined to change up at any opportunity, then ends up slippping the torque because it cant get to lock up.
If you get a fast dual or A road great, but most of the time i end up pulling it into "manual" usually 4th which doesnt hold a gear just stops it going above what you choose.
Seems ok off road but i get what rhe OP says, that it needs more revs to go up.a hill than a manual one would.
I would guess that mine would be quite an old skool type auto box though, (Hilux 3lit Invincible 2013) hopefully the newer ones are better.
That said i drove a manual the other day for the first time in about 6 months and man it was odd. I was quite surprised at how awkward it felt at first.
