Bad year for Navel Ill

Location
Cleveland
We used to have the occasional calf getting navel/joint ill. Following discussions with vet he recommended to give newborn calves a shot of terramycin. This was around 2 years ago and we haven't had any problems since.
You will in the future when you get resistance ....pretty irresponsible of your vets to suggest giving every new born calf a shot of terramycin

Not only calves that it has been a bad year for Joint Ill. It is the worst year for sheep we have ever had. This has been outdoor lambing and while the weather conditions have been atrocious at times I am struggling to find a reason.
The amount of mud we had earlier on would have been a cause but when conditions improved although still wet the Joint Ill has continued.
The only effective cure we have found has been Pen & Strep three days in a row. We have probably cured 80% completely but 15% are still lame and another 5% have been knocked on the head.

It has been incredibly time consuming as well as expensive in time and drugs. I am convinced that more research needs doing on Joint Ill and it is probably the issue that uses the highest quantity of Antibiotics in livestock farming.

It could all just be that the tough winter has caused mothers to have very poor colostrum which has then lowered the immunity in youngstock to fight off bugs
