What is this witchcraft ? Never seen a terminal like that is that tab supposed to tighten it ?

Spanner-less battery terminals is a good idea! Not sure that's the best design though - I've often found those plastic catches get ruined by people tightening them up too much and stripping the internal teeth, or the metal insert becomes unglued from the handle bit.

Spring inside? Pull the plastic knob up off the spline, turn round and drop and re tighten

That looks just like the levers you get on steering column height adjusters! Turn it then pull out to reposition lever and go again.

Should always take the Earth off before touching the positive this prevents shorting
