I've just cleaned up our cattle register. We had cows on there that were sold and moved in 2000! Couple that had been dead for over 12 months. I rang BCMS, was very apologetic, acted a bit more simple than normal and explained. They sorted it out for me and gave me a warning. This followed up with an RPA cattle inspection. The fella was great, really easy to deal with. Was totally open about everything with him, did a total tag check (luckily only 6 had just 1 tag). He made a list of things that shouldn't still be on my system and off he went. Yes, I might get a small fine on next years BPS but I am so much more relaxed with it all now it's sorted. The inspector assured me that my paperwork while messy was pretty good compared to some of the places he gets sent.

I would ring them and explain the animal is lost, don't just report it dead and send the passport back...by rights all over 48m/o deadstock need to go for tse testing and next thing someone will be visiting to question how it died and where it went to..

I have just had a problem with an animal over 48 months. It had not been tested by the knackerman. I had to prove the movement by sending a copy of the receipt from the animal moving off the farm. Turns out the driver had accidentally written the wrong year on the paperwork. Just pleased I found the receipt in my file. So make sure you file the receipts just in case something occurs.

I have always found BCMS very good with problems a phone call is usually all it takes.

The inspectors are all really nice 'yeah, we'll sort that for you etc etc'......... but then they fine you! I personally would go balls to the wall to avoid a visit like you had....... they'll find something.

We had a case of a missing cow.... we rang BCMS and reported that the cow had appeared to be missing without explanation. We were told to return the passport and we were given a ref number . If the cow turned up again then all we had to do was contact BCMS with the ref number and the passport would be re-issued. We had no inspection or anything and they were very helpful .

How do you get away with no having a movement sorted in 20 years?!

I had 1 animal that had died between injection and reading on tb test and they wouldn't sign the test off as complete until its passport had been returned to bcms.

Best traceable from farm to fork in the world? What a joke!

Just a word of advice... its much better to sort things out with BCMS asap than sit on them and brush under the carpet! If you get an inspection these errors will be flagged up and penalties could apply. Our customers run a regular cross check to make sure there are no problems its very easy and gives you peace of mind !

Every body will have to sharpen up! The new system will include Eid and real time reporting. I know I do not like it either!! But to help our exports in the real world it will come. Certain countries are unhappy with the 3 day lag so I do not know how you got away with 2 years!! The system is going to be so you Must report on smartphone or computer in real time so movement can be traced in less than 24 hrs! The system starts with new numbers so do not order to many tags. Can not say much more but I hope this helps.

There’s nothing wrong with the current system

If things go wrong it’s usually a farmer like the one earlier or a spanner in the works from the RPA etc

I cannot believe what I was reading higher up the thread tbh

For each holding number you have you can go online and manage your own movements and check tag numbers. I use a print out for TB testing or whatever

If you’ve done your movements right but someone hasn’t (maybe entered a tag wrong by a digit for an on movement) or go to a show and they forgot the off movement or whatever, BCMS put a yellow traffic light on that holding record and simply ask you to supply some facts to help

As far as I know the standard operations for incoming phone calls are customer service and anything that needs more attention goes over to the operations team

That post above gives ammo to those that want to force us down the EiD route and do away with THE most user friendly and efficient Government interface we have

It annoys me greatly tbh

Sounds like the software company supporting CTS have convinced civil servants that the system is about to fall over and that they need a new system. Why not rebuild the old one which works? The new system will cost a fortune because they always do and wont work properly because they never do. The civil service dont care because they are not spending their own money and they dont have to put up with the problems a new system causes.
I doubt there will be anything in the contract with the software supplier that says they dont get paid in full until the users of their system are happy with the system.

only ever had 1 serious problem with them, cow 'appeared' on our holding, noticed it, animal went years ago, rung up, really nasty lady, animal not in the last 3 years, probably longer, not good enough, produce movements for last 8 years, anyway, put the phone down on her. Rung next day, could go back 6 yrs on comp, then paper, not a problem, they'd look into it, sorry about previous call. Rung me next day, the animal in Question, had not been transferred properly, when transferred to me, when I took over from my father, he died 10 yrs before the animal was born, just said thankyou. Other than that always helpful.

Got nothing to do with ailing software D, I think it's big politics behind the scenes

The main problem with bcms is it's owned by IBM ( probably to save costs at time of setup) and costs a lot each time access to the database is required.

So when is the new regime starting? I really like the current system as it is quick and easy to enter info through my herd management software. No issues whatsoever. I've entered the wrong sex for the occasional calf and that is a costly mistake that takes a bit too long to resolve, but that's it really.
I lost one passport once, but that was soon solved. No idea where it went but whoever lives here in a hundred years might find its fossilised remains down the back of some cupboard one would like to suppose.
