BCPC congress to explore SFI impacts

Written by janineadamson from CPM Magazine

This year’s BCPC Congress will examine how domestic agricultural policy, particularly the Government’s Sustainable Farming Incentive, is shaping UK food production and impacting pesticide regulation.

The event, jointly organised by BCPC in association with TSG Forum, is taking place 26-27 November at Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate.

A spokesperson for BCPC says the congress promises an impressive line-up of speakers who will share knowledge on a wide range of topics related to issues on crop production and sustainability.

“The government’s SFI has provided a number of attractive options for taking land out of food production to boost biodiversity, soil health and mitigating the effects of climate change. But how is this effecting land use, and could it potentially be detrimental to the country’s food security? Will the change of government result in a further modification of policy?,” they say.

Two streams of content

As well as presentations for all delegates, sessions are split into two streams – Stream A, regulatory affairs, will look at the evolving UK crop protection regulatory landscape including latest news from HSE/CRD, the national regulator for the UK, and possible regulatory implications of precision application.

Then, Stream B, new approaches to agronomy, will explore how the latest science is being put into practice, including precision application and best use of new emerging technologies.

On the final day, the future of pesticides becomes the central theme and how the Sustainable Use Directive, the National Action Plan for Pesticides (if published) and SFI are likely to change the landscape for pesticide use in the years ahead.

The programme will then move to the afternoon workshop giving delegates an opportunity to provide comment and input into how HSE’s CRD is looking to regulate plant protection products in line with government policy.
