He needs to do something drastic to discourage people from bringing in lambs like this to the prime stock market on Mondays because if he doesn't people will stop bringing lambs that are fit to kill and that will be the start of the end of the Monday prime market at Exeter.

Going forward he needs to sell lambs like this at the end of the sale as stores and not include them in the average prices posted in the report/ on the AHDB website, also for these lambs he should charge double commission compared to what he charges for store lambs on a Friday and hopefully this will encourage people like this to bring them to the Friday store market instead.

No other market in the SW seems to get so many store lambs entered in the prime sale like Exeter seems to be getting currently.

In Longtown a few years ago if lean lambs came through in amongst the fat and if it was obvious they were sold as stores. I haven’t seen this happen lately so I’m not sure if that’s the case now.

Grass is growing very well still and the B job doesn't look like it will be a problem and these reasons coupled with many people expecting prime hoggs to be back in the £130/140 range like last year is what is now driving trade imo.

I can’t see any reason why hoggs won’t make as much or more than last year.

Spoke to Russell today, the average was ruined by a lorry pulling in from up country with 150 pure Lleyn "stores" on board and they would not take them back.

"The heaviest were 36kgs and the lightest 28kgs! Averaged £44 but truly buggered my average!" was his comment.

isnt there a grader at exeter ?
i know frome sell separately at end , and sedge they are sold separately in same pen ,

Nope. No graders but auctioneer will watch and handle most as they come in on a prime day.

I dropped some lambs in at Longtown this morning and I was told the handy weights were going to be ok so I was pleased as that’s what I had. Missed the boat for ringing for prices tonight though

That would be the answer, big mark on the ones that "fail the grade" and sell them separately in the pen and not include them in the average market price

I can remember graders at Hexham. It wasn’t always a pleasant experience

theres the problem , def need sorting and selling separate ,bound to affect pricing . wont do market rep any good either , fat buyers dont want odd ones in the pen , unless they are dealers that will sort them through .

Only brought 100 so far. Don't get me wrong hope it is good trade in spring but this 130 140 does seem a bit unrealistic to me. Hope I am proven wrong

I honestly think they will be on fire. A lot less lambs about. Less NZ to come here. Inlamb hoggs killed instead of bred last spring. How can it be wrong?
