Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

That’s very true. To many older people in sheep farming that want to by couples, store lambs or run dry sheep. I think the next couple of years could be good for people that want to lamb sheep.
I do hope you're right! The problem with the store lamb job to me is that the majority are sold over a reasonably compact period in the autumn, so the buyers can pull faces and be picky in the expectation that something else will come along. They don't want to lamb ewes, though!

There is always a reason for couples in mart , not that many just draft out on age any more , so often they are the problem/ unlucky , ones bought autumn tupped lambed and returned . often carrying resistant worms , codd , maybe scab and lice etc .
And the rest. Unexplained mortality rate was lifting. Some of the last ones I bought. Small Welsh mules with lambs, looked like they just wanted food. Think I killed two ewes out of 24 life’s bought ?‍♂️

Must of been someone else who thought they were worth nearly what he paid.
I did hear one very worrying story of someone local with confirmed mv who the vet told to sell the ewes with lambs at foot. Two years later the vets husband sold all his poor ewes (that looked like they wanted some food) at market with lambs at foot, so read into that what you will!!

Last spring we were very heavily over stocked with sheep and sucklers. No grass so as we lambed I pulled out 50 full mouth mule ewes with texel twins a piece, put them in small lots in the few crofts we have dotted about and trickled nuts to them until the lambs were 3 week old. Took them 12 families at a time (12 fit nice on bottom of wagon plenty of space so no hurt legs/ getting sh!t up) to market and cashed them avg £54/life. They would only be worth that at weaning! So this year I've bought an extra 50 tupping ewe lambs and ill out the older ewes again that way. Like someone said before, it's a nice draw just after I've finished with Hoggs, it's a long time till first draw mid July!
