We are running short of grass and our soring reseeds looking poor, we have several lambs in the 25-35kg wait bracket, would they sell ok this time of year as stores? would go on fine if plenty of grass or creep in front of them, just organic so buying creep not an option.

You can buy creep - the only problem being the last time I priced it it was £420/t for bulk. I’d sell the smallest and keep 32+?

Is there no way of pulling them out of the business and fattening them as non organic and selling them as normal lambs?

basically no. The muck produced will have non organic material in From the feed so would need to be given to someone conventional, that’s if their done inside, it’s also against organic standards to fatten lambs inside :banghead:
Btw your produce doesn’t have to be sold organic, some things I sell conventional as it suits better financially

Bakewell Market Monday 18th May

A very busy day indeed with 738 Cattle and 2,226 sheep on offer

A very busy day indeed with 738 Cattle and 2,226 sheep on offer

Don’t forget that the market is ON next Monday 25th May.

Trade good in all sections and plenty of outstanding prices achieved

The store cattle section was very busy, well supported with 493 forward and another tremendous demand. Top figures were Steers to £1,190, heifers to £1,145 and feeding bulls to £960

What these prices do not illustrate is the level of trade for younger cattle which a detailed inspection of the sample prices listed later in this report will show.

There were 110 finished cattle with trade well up on the week. Top figures 244p and £1,468 with the average for the 34 heifers looking good at 193.3p

A decent turnout of 96 OTM and feeding cows selling very well indeed. Top figures 162p and £1,192. The overall average an excellent 126.8p.

Calf numbers creeping up to 39 with bulls to £405 and heifers to £232.

The largest entry of sheep that we have seen for many weeks with a total of 2,226 on offer.

Spring lamb numbers continue to build with 416 this week. Top figures 329p and £134.31 per head. The SQQ average looked good at 282.3p.

Old season lambs were out in force selling to 240p and £128.44. The SQQ average for a mixed sample emerged at 216.1p.

A big turnout of 824 cull sheep attracted plenty of attention and ewes reached £135 and the average £77.99.

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES

Get them gone this week if possible. The end of Ramadam is this coming weekend. Hoggs and ewes in demand for that. After this week they will more than likely ease off the boil a bit. ?

Ewes at Ashford today were generally lower, more in as well. The plainer types looked well sold, big meaty ewes struggled to get £80 whereas I sold very lean and rough ewes at £79.00 Hoggets with teeth up 56 kg only £80. Other heavy hoggets 50 to 60 kg £90 to £120, several were tups.

ABP £5.50 for NSL tomorrow

Not anywhere near good enough! And they are only offering to pay that due to the strong prices in the livestock markets this week!

Make them bid for them in the livestock markets.

Exeter had 2077 spring lambs on Monday!

Sedge had nearly 1500 spring lambs on Monday!

And both had hellish strong trades for spring lambs.

South Molton had 1800 spring lambs on Thurs.

No idea what Honiton had on Monday but im told the market was packed out with lambs.

Sell live to thrive :)

Whats classed as organic on a farm? Is it the business name? The holding number? The address or something else? Sorry for my ignorance I have never had anything to do with it whatsoever.

I thought you could have just pulled the lambs out of the organic status fed them up and sold them as conventional. Never thought about the dung being ‘contaminated’ if you hoppered them indoors.

Maybe find some grazing for them elsewhere and kill them off that? If someone wanted to hopper a load of lambs ad-lib on my field I would let them gladly does the ground a world of good.

Can you graze your organic sheep on winter tack or does that have to be an organic farm where they go to?

Could two brothers run from the same place but one operates as organic and one not on seperate land on the same farm but use all the same tackle?
