Me and the Mrs have some right set too’s about these sheep lambing
Some stress on at times until we get a good few on the ground
Weather they shed there wool or they need a bed time cuddle I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t devote everything they’ve got too it really 😵💫… me and my mrs can barely work together it gets too shouty 😅😂 anything said during sheep work is inadmissible in court though
 
I seem to earn less than minimum wage whatever I’m doing!
I think the cost of a cow and all the rest involved it’s just common sense to be around to assist a cow or heifer when she’s on calving. Any losses are a year wasted at least and then there’s a fat cow to deal with next time possibly mastitis too otherwise set a calf on.
Yeah I was just talking about that with a mate tonight , sometimes wonder how many of us are just busy fools 🙈
Fair enough , but I also have to agree with Woolless . When you see these “good stockman “ that go on about animal welfare and husbandry but half there cows/ewes have C section scars up there sides I do wonder how that makes them good stocksmen in many peoples eyes ! Never checked lambing sheep outside at night as for inside last thing and first thing .

I would have to admit to a few night time checks last spring when calving heifers for the first time. They were an unknown quantity and I am forever out of bed for a pee anyway! They will be calving outside this time. My point is that breeding towards easier-kept, less labour intensive stock doesn't need to be a scorched earth policy and result in extremely plain animals to sell and it seems crazy not to move in that direction if not doing so results in having to work ridiculous hours and not getting fully rewarded for that effort.

We where sorting out ewes and lambs last Sunday, singles and twins out of a pen, it got very shouty and in the end she just went home. 😬😂

Yes you are probably right but when store cattle are a poor trade the buyers look in the opposite direction when anything R grade or lower appears where the other stuff good R and above still sells at reasonable rates
Then there’s the question of the price of feed and what’s worth feeding.
If you are going to feed a one it might as well be a goodn
The rest want to be dining cheaply

Well we eat a few of our own and the beef is lovely to eat. Not sure if it’s hanging time or breed but it’s definitely better than anything bought
You don’t really have to reduce profitability. Biggest first loss of profitability is a poor bull. You can put an easy calving limmy bull onto some pretty average cows and turn out U grade steers and heifers all day long. I do it. The main reason for it was to increase profit

You don’t really have to reduce profitability. Biggest first loss of profitability is a poor bull. You can put an easy calving limmy bull onto some pretty average cows and turn out U grade steers and heifers all day long. I do it. The main reason for it was to increase profit

Should have been got rid of years ago, it was brought in for intervention payments and encousages meat yield not meat quality, everyone knows the arse is not the best eating and you need fat to get taste. No where else in the world pays for producing more mince and less steak.

My point about consumption was based on the fact that the countries that eat most beef have grading based on eating quality and are dominated by our native genetics. I've been to Argentina, seen the cattle and eaten the beef!
I also think that cattle will move towards those that do best on grass, although there will still be a place for those that can efficiently convert feed grade byproducts etc. But doesn't look like they will be getting any cheaper.

It doesn't matter what breed they are or how easy calving they.they can all come out in a bag or have a leg back.lost plenty inside an out but at least when there in.you can't say if only we'd seen her sooner.

We might need meat yield the way things are looking
Normal protocol is to produce what folks want and if it’s the bonus pennys on the grid then that’s the best job

Had a 5th calf cow calve a big lim bull calf last week. Brother watched it from first waterbag too calf coming out. Dead as a doornail. Took about 30 minutes from start too finish so she didn’t muck about. Absolutely nothing we could have done about it. But if he hadn’t been there we’d be cursing about it died because we weren’t there.
