If the demand/need is there it will. These are independent firms with their own ships sending stock to Libya and turkey what's to stop them coming over and setting up here? Build their own lairage/berth and run independently of ferry firms and port authorities. It's only lack of real numbers stopping it happening at the moment but if we go down the WTO route the lambs will have to go somewhere that's for sure

The problem with dedicated ferry firms are the Animal Rights Mob who have a target that is easy to attack. If livestock go on scheduled ferries that run 24 hours a day and 7 days a week it is impossible for them to target every load.
This is why the Irish cattle that travel through Dover never have an issue.

How do they get through without all the hassle when they wont carry English stock or are they doing on the quiet?

All "legitimate" as the cattle all travel on breeding papers which the main ferries accept!!

I took some sheep to a farm last week from a market and they told me that for part of the winter they had been sending lambs to the continent from I believe Harwich on a normal ferry and everything was going great untill the animal rights found out and the ferry firm pulled out. After that they couldn't make it pay by going on the dedicated ferry.

I believe there's one firm who own an abattoir who also own their own ferry and regularly do live exports...I can't categorically confirm this but have been informed by people in the know

cattle numbers here must be short i've just put some on for st merryn and the lorry's going down there less than half full.

That was never a good sign. Means they can't sell what's in the chillers. Of they could they would just edge the price up a bit and draw more cattle from away.

Springers were making between £95 and £105 for good 40/42kg lambs at Bentham last night, didn't see many hoggs sold as had to get home but there was a lot in. Spoke to one lass from Derbyshire and they had sold two thousand this week and had four hundred in and more to sell next week

One Christmas st merryn agent said the most hogs will get to will be 3.60. Sold the best that year for 5.25 only 3 months later

I know they're full of sh!t but can't see it getting more than £3.60...anyway I have one load of bullocks to go till September and they're booked in so good luck to everyone else

Mid March 15 they were 3.52 but they are actually 3.55 now if in weight, last surpassed at the beginning of that month when they were 3.60. Woodheads I mean.

You and others like you will have to take a stand, and maybe move away to keep Woodheads on their toes!!
