I think them that were lambing in the midst of beast from the east might disagree .
we were lambing when the beast from the east came, the night the snow came I went out snow ploughing then my mate took over but he came back after a while as the snow had blocked the rad on the tractor and the air intake, lucky didnt feck it up, we were thawing it all out in the workshop with heat guns about 2 in the morning, mate was frozen but I was warm couldn't make it out, council rang and called us off as it was freezing so hard, next morning I was rough as feck with flu that's why I didn't feel cold, one tap outside that didn't freeze to water all the cattle and sheep and still had to go out snowploughing, great fecking fun that was,

Full time farming BSE year just after he bought a wagon load of cows, and they collapsed 🤦🏼‍♂️
1996, the year l started on my own, bought the cows/hfrs 95, when they were on a roll, then bang slam thankyou. Milk and wheat price went into decline, buggered.

not really sure how we survived it, all my assets went into a steep decline. Looking back, l think it was sheer cussedness, bad accident didn't help either. They reckon hard work never killed anyone, might not, but pretty certain it buggered a few up, a month in hospital, and 18 months to get back to near normal. But it got me in the end, relapse, then down to disabled, 12 years later.

but can honestly say, pretty well enjoyed my farming career. OM wanted me to be an auctioneer, he never stood a chance !

my two, decided by 5, what they wanted to do, daughter reception teacher, and she still is, 40 yrs on, son, farming, and he is. They never wavered. Perhaps they inherited the stubborn streak from me.

The problem with farming is that when things are going right there’s a huge amount of job satisfaction and it is the best job in the world. The problem is that we have to endure the bad bits to get to the good bit.
Is enduring the bad bits what makes it good though?

Anything that is good all the time just becomes a bit easy and unfulfilling I reckon.

Going to the pub occasionally with your mates and having a few too many is great laugh. Going to the same pub night after night with the same people and drinking too much….isn’t so great!
