Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

my 'busy' time is coming up, going around the cattle now they are out. Been a very long wet winter, yards get a bit greasy, then l get banned from going up there, bit too wobbly on me pins.

and l count them into a field, and count them every day. Son isn't so good at that.

easy way to wind him up, just ask, 'is that 20, with the bull, or not counting the bull'.

l have always counted stock, every time l go round, sometimes even the neighbours, if l feel nosey. Just don't understand why he doesn't.
When I was a kid and willing to learn I was told the first thing you do is count cattle when you go into a field. Trouble is we have sheep now and that would take rather a long time but I still find myself trying 😂

My mrs will ring me and ask how many sheep are in so and so field. I will ask if she has counted them? Usually ‘yes’. Me ‘that’s keen, how many is there?’ ‘82’ me ‘there must be then’. 😝

Got a phone call last night from my livestock haulier to tell me they’re stopping the livestock side at the end off the month. Family business been doing it for 53 years. One of the reasons he quoted was the lack of cattle numbers now. Actually felt quite sad after coming of the phone.
We are in a business that’s in decline no two ways about it. Sometimes when I hear another herd of cows are going I think in a way it will be better for what’s left but in another way it isn’t.
I was speaking to one of my neighbours yesterday he’s not putting the bull in with his they are going, that farm has had cattle for as long as I can remember and before that

Their deckers are coming to the stage they need replacing. £250k a piece for new ones.
seems like every part of the supply chain has to keep new kit to keep ahead of legislation , all they do is keep passing it back down the supply chain with us at the bottom having to compete with imports , we are at tesco mercy , lucky if they throw us a few crumbs to buy some old kit to keep farming .
