I’m not saying they will pay to do, but observe the fact they are prepared to stand the money for a year or more to get a supply of them, and guarantee a minimum price but not prepared to do anything similar to secure suckler bred stock. Judge by what you see, not what you are told. My haulier does a lot of work for them and says they are moving a lot of these stirks into farms so plenty are signing up in fact many seem to be leaving the b/w bulls for them instead. Both schemes are through Buitelaar

How much net profit are the farmers making??

Switch away from B/W will be due to the ever increasing feed costs and increased value of the these calves the last 12 months.

The feed costs will be a factor but the reared bull calves bought through them to fatten have been the same price for over three years. I guess being able to feed home grown forage and graze them if you want will make the continentals attractive. And not having to pay for them! Margins will be tight but what’s new there?

You will be paying for it one way or another!

Just like 0% finance on a new tractor, the cost of the money is added onto the sale price before they quote you.

I don’t doubt there will be an interest payment but for someone starting up or looking to expand it’s an alternative to the bank especially if you already have bank borrowings. They pay you the balance at slaughter. This is just the start of things to come like crop credit on broilers in the 60’s. Look where the poultry industry is now. Many might see that as bad but it is ultra efficient and is profitable without government support, how many beef farmers can truly say the same?

I'm on the scheme and finish blue x dairy steers/heifers for them

There is no interest payment. I order the calves. They arrive. Once the batch is ready for slaughter they start paying you once you've sent them the batch purchase value in finished beasts. It all hinges on the quality of the calves in the first place. I've done about 200 for them so far and quite like the system. As has been alluded to, it's a great way to expand quickly.

but there isnt a cost of the money for a new tractor ,theyre registered as a finance company so theyre allowed to make money up out of thin air just like the banks do

The cost of the calves will be added to the purchase price!

Morrisons ( or any other company for that matter ) will not be able to provide tens of millions of ££s as loans intrest free! they will be borrowing the money themselves, the farmer will pay the intrest for it at some point along the line!

Intrest will be loaded onto the price of the calves but they wont tell you that!

Sounds very much like the chicken job, get enough farmers in, then make you buy their over priced feed/ calves etc, margins will be wafer thin for farmers and most suppliers will have no option to carry on as they have borrowed money etc to build sheds to house the stock.

Nobody is making me do anything. There is a margin in it, that's all that matters. It's not my sole enterprise. And unfortunately regardless of whether we like it or not it's the direction things are going in.

Have you down the costings for keeping them in all their life??

No its not the way things have to go, it will only go like that if farmers like you take up the scheme, they aren't forcing you to do it now but what will happen is when they get enough farmers signed up they will change the specs/ terms etc etc massively in their favour like they have done with chickens and pigs!
