Down in the South East where people who can handle livestock are few and far between and would want a lot of money to do the job. We sell them in the pens, which is very fast and easy to do.
They are sorted into weights and numbers in pens can be variable with up to 40. Selling similar sheep then auctioneer can give options on more than one pen. Nearly always drawn to go from heaviest to lighter.
easily do well over a thousand an hour like that.

how do they stop someone bidding ? the auctioneer is stood up high on the raceway and will see someone stood back bidding, I know I have done it much to a few peoples confusion

They stand by pens to mark the pens they want then the other buyers know. It helps them split the lambs up between themselves. Just locally it’s got really bad where the buyers will now openly discuss which pens they will have. Obviously doesn’t happen on the stores or if a farmer wants some cull ewes

I can’t believe sheep are still sold in pens. How do buyers handle them if they are all towards the back of the pens…..seems very antiquated

Normally the sheep get pushed to the front of the pens by the lad marking them

Everywhere that isn’t up North? I’ve never in my life been to a market that did anything but sell in the pens, so that’s ‘normal’ as far as I’m concerned.

Perhaps I should have a road trip, just to see the odd ways things are done up North? Not sure I could cope with 1am cull ewe sales though!

Lambs would weigh less sold in the ring wouldnt they,( especially if weighed at point of sale like cattle ) ? could that be the attraction of buying at midnight after watching a long queue to unload ?

I’m pretty sure that’s why SQQ prices quoted by Northern marts are generally higher.

More a distillers product, 20 protein but with starch and sugars unlike grains. Got the first load coming this week. I have been using grains but the price has gone up and this looks better value, more energy and no 5-10% run off.

What are you feeding that alongside?! I've been looking at the co-products for the coming winter. I should have 300+t of barley in the shed and can't decide whether to feed or sell. I'm guessing I'd be no better off selling and then feeding co-products as they just track cereal price anyway?!

They do to an extent, but I think the tide is turning a bit, so much stock is disappearing the supply demand balance is levelling up a bit and the saving is getting bigger. You need to work with what’s local to you really, haulage kills moist feeds paying to move water. I will mix this with potato waste and ground maize for the bulls

I've never sold fat lambs through a ring but bought stores out of both its easier to handle lambs in a pen and its quicker the downside is at store sales there's too many people in the way who aren't buying and you can't get to the lambs, but it's easier to spot lame lambs etc through a ring

They don’t, you just make sure they handle the good ones at the front

I think the way forward is energy production and storage if you can do both you’ll be quids in , airlines are investing heavily in both carbon off setting (which is B.S) and in renewable energies, hydrogen fuel being their main aim. Trouble is if they achieve the latter there will have already been thousands of acres of good ground planted up with trees.

If you've got 20 lambs in a pen and you want to sell them as say 8,8,4 how do you do that if they're all lumped in together? It's not unusual in the ring if 20 come in for buyers to ask for one to be taken out. You can't show the lambs properly if they're all jammed in together. I would have thought the buyers will bid to the price of the poorest in the pen. If the mart is well organised it will be just as quick going through a ring as along a gantry and a lot easier for the auctioneer and clerk if they're not on their feet for 3 hours

You put them in 3 pens (some seem to want to put them in 10 pens of two ), or if there’s only an odd one or two, mark them.

The same as selling through a ring, they should always be in level lots anyway.
Buyers will soon crib about an odd one and pull him out in the pens, even if just to try to take the heat out of a decent trade.
