I put a 100 ewes away to winter and was told yesterday no more sheep. they are going down the route of herbal lays. So probably drop the numbers here unless I find somewhere else which will be doubtful
Yes even at current sheep prices the money they are paying for the over wintered bird seed ( which i guess is what they meant yesterday ) option under SFI means that option will pay a lot better than putting sheep on those fields in the winter months.

And apparently there is about another 60 options for grassland under SFI going to be released this spring/ summer as well.

If it’s just for winter then definitely. The 2 people I’m thinking of are expecting summer grazing to be affected as well.
The over wintered bird seed option means it will need to be shut up from stock/mowing by the end of July at the latest!

But on the upside it can be grazed from March onwards so perhaps ideal for turning some cattle out early if weather conditions allow.

60 bloody hell how many options do they want 🤦‍♂️

Trouble is that is a very costly option for housing other than for short periods like lambing when you take into account the cost of straw/ making silage etc.
As a mostly owner occupier whose knocking on a bit, with all PP in a LFA, I’ve done the sums, and it looks as if I’ll be better off putting the place into herbal leys, low input grassland, legumes, etc and keeping less stock. It will actually be a good way of drifting into semi retirement while guaranteeing a reasonable income for the next 3 years. Before this the original plan was to let some ground out, but the scheme looks more attractive.

I can’t be the only one, so that’s less being produced and less opportunities for others

I'm sure there's a lot more money can be earned by putting a shed up than can earnt by buying land. The inheritance tax benefits etc are starting to be outweighed by the sheer cost of it.
Thats what i did , i cant buy land here owned by a duke round me and if he sells he sells big bits £££ renting well everyone chasing rented land im not even going to bother entering that race so shed it was …. Invested in worse things…
