With the associated costs, it's a risky business jumping in and out of things mind isn't it. When your out now you need a fair lump to get back in, no guarantees that one years trade follows the other. Average it out, dont get giddy and invest in over your head on a good year should help with leaner years. It takes some cash flow these days just to keep things ticking along.
That’s very true. It’s probably better for people just to try and keep a few over and see how they feel about it and work from there. I usually find there’s only good money in hoggs every 4 ish years on average so it always feels to me like I’m working the other three for nowt much. Following a good year isn’t always the best plan of attack everyone else might well be thinking the same.
No way is it all plain sailing the costs of keeping these extra sheep mount up every time you move them or do something with them it’s all money. It’s also not easy for someone with a load of ewes to look after keeping hoggs over. They take from what the ewes could have had.

There could be smaller cattle coming through though which might distort the figures?
What I’m meaning is some folks might be selling some cattle sooner that they would normally keep due to the trade
Always tempting to sell when trade is good....you never know what's around the corner nowadays. We always used to keep the smaller calves till may but often folk are getting filled up by then and it gives us another shed to lamb in, which is very necessary at the moment. River past the house been a full flood for the last 3 days, I think I'm staring to grow webbed feet.

I think that it’s a funny time of year at the moment the way the spring is looking. The folks that are wanting cattle to turn out onto grass might well wait till there’s some chance of that happening. I was thinking today we are probably two months away from getting any out the way the land is. If I was wanting cattle to turn out onto grass I might probably wait a bit longer too. Straw being where it is isn’t helping either

A sheeps biggest enemy is the sheep next to it

We had planned to fill a shed up with stores from another place but that shed is now filling up with cows and calves and as each day passes it’s looking less likely those cows and calves will be going out. Things are always changing I suppose
