“Dad, where’s my pet lamb?”
“Sorry it died the other day, but don’t worry I’ll pay the disposal charge”
🤣🤣
The thought never crossed my mind….. honestly 😇😇😇
I let mine have a gimmer, i then give her the choice of cash or keep. She chooses cash as ‘it could die any minute’ her words. She’s wise at 6

I thought it was tradition that the dad matches what the kids pet sheep makes when the sell it.

Ie if the pet lamb makes £216 the dad gives the kid an extra £216 + the £216 the lamb made(y):)
Christ don’t tell my boys that 😳

I just waive my right to claim any expenses incurred while keeping their sheep!

Although… I bought the initial 4 ewes and gifted them. Every other ewe they’ve got has been paid for with the proceeds from their lamb sales. 😉 they’ve got to learn somewhere! 😂

My uncle gifted my 3 a black ewe each. They get them for their 1st birthday and he replaces them if they die/cull. The misses said they need to be different so there easily identifiable so I don’t steal the lambs 😳 slanderous comment I thought 😂
The eldest is 12 now so over the years he’s had a lot of lambs away so it’s put around 2k into his savings, it’s a great idea.
The eldest went to sell his this time and realised you can draw it out in cash!! Sharp like!! Readies on the hip now 🤦‍♂️

Father bought us a heifer calf (BB) when we reached our 10th birthday . We had to rear it and could do with it what we wanted . My siblings sold theirs at approx 5mths old but I kept mine and made a cow of it and she had 11 calves .
.....I wonder if it was his way of deciding which one of us was really interested in farming .......
However....both my siblings have extremely well paid jobs ,but me, stuck here scratting anything in mud and slurry........perhaps they weren't so daft after all !!

Years ago when the cattle belonged to Mum we had an obnoxious old devon cross cow that lost its calf at calving so we went to the farm down the road and got a wild charly cross calf to put on, on the way back Mum said "if you can get that calf on that cow you can have it" anyway the cow took her honey sweet and reared her well, came to time to sell the calves and she asked what week I was going to take her I told her I wasn't, anyway I kept her on and put her to the bull and she had a bull calf Mum said "you have had it now you will have to sell that one" I didn't sell him I kept him on and it was the first one we done for home kill, sold most of it and he paid of well, Mum had some for keep.
Not long after that we went in to partnership and I am here in the mud and slurry, wouldn't change it though.

Really!!? Iv got to tb test whole herd end of May, think of splitting test and selling some.
Trade is very strong for hard grazing types like you have.

10/11 month old plain Sim steers on Sat around £1050/1100 head.

The black ones ought to be worth that and the brown herefords £1350 as a ball park.

If they are organic then should make more!

On the trade if you are thinking of selling i would get a pre movement test done on them and sold before you do the main herd test.
