Selling ewes and lambs yesterday I was talking to farmers in the pens to see why they were buying outfits (trying to sell them mine as well obviously) Now what struck me was how many where older farmers who said we still have a bit of land and like sheep around but don’t want to lamb. Not worry about the cost just wanted some 🤷‍♂️ must of talked to 10 the same! There was only 1 father and daughter team who said they’d taken more land and where ramping up numbers which I thought is why most would be buying them. They were the only ones that were pushing on farming.
Thought it was quite interesting 🤔

A lot of old boys would still be lambing sheep if they could do it’s in their blood and they want to see some new life. Better than any pills you can buy

sooner lamb my own outside , and take the losses ,than bring unknown issues on to farm . Nothing beats seeing a new life on a warm morning .

I always get the impression that people buy them for lawnmowers when a bit of grass and sun appears as you say the money side doesn’t seem to be a priority

That was the impression I got. I was thinking after lambing when folk have lost a few ewes and lambs to weather, disease etc. They would be buying a few to top numbers back up but didn’t seem to be the case. I think everyone has had a gut full of lambing sheep this time and didn’t want any more apart from the people that hadn’t lambed any and would just buy outfits. One fella said he lambs 200 and the lot were going with lambs at foot. Never lambing any again 😂

Years ago I was at longtown in April or May an older fella off the west coast of Scotland appeared with some of the best Cheviot and Texel hoggs you could wish to see, he brought them every year. I went over for a bit crack with him I asked him how he had come on with them, he said he made his money off caravans didn’t like caravans but liked sheep he couldn’t remember or care what he paid for them or what they cost him it made no odds
What a good way to farm get rid of the financial aspect of it all 🤓

Later in the year when the sun is shining and we're getting a fiver more than we did 20 years ago we'll all think sheep are great and what happened in April will be a distant memory
I do not think this will be the case this time!

Back in 2018 ( or whichever year it was that prime hogg prices jumped massively overnight in March ) there was a real buzz/ very positive vibes around the sheep pens for several weeks but this time even thou prices are at a level never seen before it does not matter what sheep market you go to everything feels very flat and subdued.

Which i suspect is partly due to the weather the last few months but also things like the very high costs of inputs/ The ending of area payments for land and being replaced by the SFI scheme which is pretty much unworkable on all grass livestock farms/ increasing BS red tape and the likes of the EA etc on farmers backs all the time and forcing farms to spend 100,000s of ££ just to stay in business keeping livestock and the UK population fed in a world that is has not been unstable as currently is the case since WW11

And lets not get onto the bloody AHDB staff who's wages are being paid by British farmers levy money going on national UK media and saying its great that imports can replace low UK production due to the weather :mad::mad::mad::mad:

I don’t think it will this time, not even £180-200 is persuading them to keep going.
I honestly don’t think the current sheep prices is that exciting🤷🏼‍♂️
Maybe I’m just a greedy pansy but £200 should be the norm

It’s a good market to be selling into, not that I do, probably more likely to become a buyer🤣
