Beet '22

You guys are gluttons for punishment. I've worked that out. It's just the dodgy wet harvests that would really upset me. The government fudging about with the seed dressings, BS playing funny fudgers with the price when they are a monopoly and then a wet back end... I mean there are places where you can pay a dominatrix to beat you up and it would cost a lot less.

BUT would it be as much fun as growing beet?????

What you mention about is 100% correct but it does keep the job fun!

I didn’t have the seed dressing. It’s had insecticide sprayed on. One or two plants looking a bit virusy now but very good on the whole. Is it worth roguing out those yellowing plants while I go through taking out bolters? Or is it pointless? Still more bindweed and cranesbill about on the thin areas than I’d like but otherwise good. Needs a drink though. Flagging by day but not getting crisped yet.
If I carry on next year it means I can’t I shut the shop for 5 months over winter. But I reckon I’ll need rod links for this coming winter then to get the money back for those I need to run yet another season and on it goes.

Can't "proper farmers" do it properly and still have fun and enjoyment doing it????
a 'proper farmer' is a misnomer really because it is very much an 'opinion' that varies between groups in society......take the latest 'sfi' fiasco....or ask rspb....national trust etc:rolleyes:. what a 'proper farmer' is....heck i even got someone staying in our barn say 'i love it..,,just like a real farm'🙄

3 pages ago i asked how beet stacked up against 'enhanced stubble' at £160/ac.....no-one responded :scratchhead: ....now i would expect....given your all 'proper farmers' .....a few of you to say 'this is my gm after harvesting /delivery' for last season:scratchhead:...i mean you all pick the agronomy down to the finest 'decimal'

all i know is my neighbour reckoned they lost money and ,as a result, grew half this yr to compare to a 2 yr grass ley that he planted purely for rotational purposes and mulch mows grass back in :scratchhead:

On a single year, single field comparison I'd say that last year the enhanced stubble would be marginally better than beet for a lot but I don't look at it as a single crop. I look at the whole picture over the whole farm, enhanced stubble wouldn't do anything for my farm other than give me a mess to look at all year and possibly a weed burden in subsequent years. Beet allows me to deep cultivate(the only time in the rotation) add any nutrient top ups, again the only time in the rotation I apply p,k,mg ect and it allows me to have cover crops and sheep grazing aswell as apply good doses of FYM.
Individually many things I do may not look great on paper but add the pigs to the beet to the corn and all together they work.

Those lovely people at HMRC seem to think I'm doing alright and beet are worth doing!!!!🙄

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. It’s been 3 years since my last confession. But I have now been tempted. I ask the soil gods for forgiveness, for I know my land is too heavy for root crops but I am too weak. So give me 1 final dry autumn in ‘23 and I promise to never sin again.
