Managed to spray Thiopron 4l/ha, Escolta 0.35l/ha and Copper 1l/ha last night. It will be interesting to see how long the Thiopron (Sulphur) manages to stay on the leaf to produce Hydrogen Sulphide to kill the fungus in these heavy showers.

Is thiopron expensive?

I think it’s £10/ha @ 4l/ha.

Why do we go with full rate beet fungicides but no one does in cereals? 🤔
More green area to protect?
Longer to harvest?

Your levy paid for the BBRO trial work that forms the basis of the advice for fungicide programmes (pre Cersocpera). From mid 2000's (earlier really) but from then when strobs came into usage BBRO did several years of trials with the trial protocol set out to compare different timings and different rates at different timings. It is all written up in the various Beet reviews you receive. And presented at the many winter BBRO meetings.

The gist of the trial data tended to indicate that a full rate fungicide late July/early August to coincide with start of any disease (primarily mildew and /or rust) was optimum. Cercospera has been bubbling around since late 2000's but last year was first time it 'took off'. A few years ago BBRO got concerned about Stemphylium which appeared in crops in North West Norfolk (nearest point to Holland was view) but that disease hasn't ever become established.

I was just interested. I realise the bbro are very thorough. Not seen any early 2000s trial work…..

At least there will be more of a chance to have an early lift. I don’t think Bury St Eds opened until almost double digits of October last year? Apparently test digs are showing low sugars unsurprisingly which isn’t good and factory early opening is likely partly driven by lack of sugar stocks?
