How does the soil behave / look like after a 2 year ley? Does it look sad, or does it look like it'll grow a cracking crop of pretty much anything?

This is the top couple of inches after a one year lay, on kindish land, photo taken in June. We usually have reasonable wheat crops after grass but this year we will be going straight in with the Mzuri rather than cultivating. Problem is the ground is so hard and dry now I wonder if we don't get a bit of rain in the next couple of weeks how well the drill will go in.

Put in some grass on one of our heaviest fields the other day, that will be interesting this time next year, and more akin to how most of your land would behave. Not that it will germinate well until we get a rain, was expecting some this weekend which never materialised.

Id still do wheat. Leave the others for breaks
Do you pre-em after DD into grass. We have just put small field in and have been strongly recommended Defy and Vigon as field has BG problem pre-4yr grass ley for haylage and grazing. Never DD before and just looks a little bit slitty still to me (750 used).
