Fiskars X27.
I have the X25 & X21, and I have a Gransfors Maul. Bearing in mind I'm only 5'4" and 60kg - I use the X25 to split the big stuff into smaller chunks and the X21 to split the chunks into logs (to save myself a bit of effort swinging the big one). I only use the maul on the really big stuff, and even then on a nice frosty/frozen winter morning you can still split big stuff with the fiskars.

That's a fairly comprehensive vote for the fiskars x27!!!

Thanks for the input folks. Working on a online buy now.

Returned the offending maul and not much fuss in coop to be fair. Not sure refund transaction worked yet and will need to verify but it'll be sorted.

Local ag. store and got one very similar to this

9 year later still going strong. Haven't needed to touch the blade yet either... and Iv smacked it off concrete a few times too :bag:

Brother had a wooden handled version, which broke. He went to get a new wooden shaft - buying a whole new fiberglass maul was cheaper than a replacement handle??

I also bought a fibreglass hand axe in Tesco about 4 years ago for a whole £2  needed 15mins on the bench grinder to put an edge on the blade but it's been very good ever since.

Splitting mauls should supposedly never need touching up and should come blunt and supposedly if using an axe a couple of hits against a piece of stone to blunt it should help with splitting as its to do with trying to cut the fibres v tearing the wood apart

Dont know how true it all is but my wetterlings didn't have much of an edge to it when i bought it it splits fine and considering how expensive it was and its hand made i shouldnt think its an accident

Does anyone make a x shaped splitting axe to split a log 4 ways? I appreciate it would probably only work on easy splitting stuff but would save a lot of setting up.

Maybe I feel an entry in the bodgers thread coming on...

What about the idea of putting a few logs upright in an old car tyre so when they split they don't fly or fall over, it then gives you the chance to shift yourself round and split the other way without having to set them up again ;)

Combine that with my idea and I'd be out performing a log splitter:D

This works brilliantly
I've got a tyre set at about 3ft off the ground on a old water trough mount made of concrete blocks.

Just fill the tyre with logs and smash them up with the maul, moving around the tyre as you go, lots of split logs very quickly

Gransfors Bruks. You need to buy one axe in a lifetime that your grandchildren can proudly say "I've got my grandfather's axe" about. They are great to use too.

x27 isnt really a splitting maul
its a splitting axe
i have a composite stihl splitting axe
which is razor sharp
and is not tiring to use
but knotty stuff i have a cheap stihl maul to use
the extra weight does help
and can be used to drive wedges
the composite stihl is excellent
but i would prefer a longer handle such as the x27
