The cost to the Public of food has gone down to 7/8% today, Was 35% in the 60s/70s
So a diffrence of 27/28% of the Publics money gone into the economy as a whole, away from agriculture.
Seems to me we were subed to keep us going to produce the cheap food ( no brainer there then)
But now we re bumping along the bottom. So is the general economy, and this industry has no more to give( although Govs are trying to take back what they can, where they can , for £ and votes of the enviromentalists)

Seems like a perfect storm on the way?
OR should we revert back to the peasantage we originated from. Seems MASSER got more respect then

Its has never happened because farmers got subsidy , in the 1990s with barley at about £60 ton it would not have been grown without subsidy.

"continuation of land based subsidies"

It's a strange one isn't it? Agriculture has been subsidised (until recently), paid for per ha. Intensive pig/poultry got nothing (although there may have been import tariffs/quotas, and theoretically they've been eating subsidised grain).

Genuine question, because ELMS is mainly land based support. How could this be improved?
Subsidies have historically been land based... you owned land you got paid
Disguise it anyway you like, landowners paid via tennants or direct from govt
Some landowners chose to use that cash to subsidise their farming operations
This is continuing but with some " public good" requirements attached ( which favour land ownership over farming in many cases)
Solution...get rid of subsidy.

Level playing field for all foodstuffs imported is much more important in my view

We haven't published membership numbers. It's probably not easy to get new members if you say you've only got half a dozen members. Plus the people we're talking to also don't know. Suffice to say there aren't tens of thousands of BFU members. We might publish numbers in a few weeks time anyway. Depends what steering committee say.

  • Important thing is it's one member one vote for key issues or where we need to gather views.
  • It's farmer only members.
  • Any member can easily raise an issue and get some representation under BFU banner.
  • It's £10/annum membership.
The member fee isn't really high enough. If it was just £50 we could have someone working full time, therefore get so much more done. We really ought to increase fees, as it would catapult us forward. Tricky balance between attracting members and retaining members because we would get more things done.

BFU is probably on the cusp of changing from a tiddly little organisation to something with some clout. A little bit more income would mean achieving so much more.

Edit. Other import thing is NFU are changing as a result of BFU existing imho. Would the assurance reviews have happened if it wasn't for BFU and NFU losing members?
What about a minimum membership fee and the option to pay more if members are willing?

I have just asked Barkers Animal Health to email the flyer to all their customers, which they are happy to do........ so will soon be going out in their monthly statements.

Hopefully that may add several new members....... so please support Barkers if you are in the South of the UK and need animal products.
Already do
