Biomass Suppliers List and Woodsure

I am working for two people at either end of the spectrum both making BSL/Woodsure chips
No1 Guy
Scottish landowner with trees everywhere you look and a 199kW heating his house and 3 properties, not a single chip sold.
We had all the Woodsure s..t to fill in, send a sample and pay £156 only get this response. You have made the 1st April deadline but...."If your Certification is not completed by 1st June 2022 your BSL number and RHI payments could be at risk." he is now worried as hell.

No2 A huge waste business
Full-blown waste operation making & selling over 10,000T of BSL chip across three BSL numbers, "Virgin naturally season green waste", "Waste virgin blend" & "Waste recycled".
The paperwork is a bit more than above but not much (public liability etc).
Called today to make payment and was told "Oh you are waste you don't pay anything, you are all done," I asked about arboreal waste but that was still OK. I would not be surprised if they come back after April with more questions but at this moment they are through the door and will retain their BSL's come 1st April

So over 10,000T of waste wood goes out as BSL making the Woodsure scheme a joke, but the rest have to jump through hoops and pay for the privilege.
So fallen trees from around our farm are waste too? Should I register?

I just quit BSL. Will buy in instead its easier.
It does seem crazy that they can't make the job simple, we signed up forWS, paid our dues and promptly got the scabby email about having cancelled our BSL Number. I have got 25t of chip in the shed that was produced when our BSL number was valid, and we need to write it down on our next three RHI submissions, so we just can't afford not to. My sympathies are with you

Trying to sort this now, originally signed up to BSL as a producer trader but we don’t sell any wood anymore. Could we be classed as a Self supplier? It would be a lot cheaper than this Producer/trader scam we’re being forced into.

Can anyone advise?

We buy in round wood by the lorry load to use in our boiler to heat a house and an industrial fan to dry rugs as part of our business.
We are the same, use our own wood and arb rings, so needed to be Producer/Trader. We have registered as Self Supplier for WS, I don't think anything is guaranteed as they could just make up a new rule, but so far seems ok as we are not selling any.

if you are buying in wood by the lorry load, you need to be buying from a BSL supplier.
Then you dont need to do anything, other than submit your RHI and keep the evidene of the BSL supplier (youll need to put their number when you submit meter readings)

you are "only" a self suppier if you burn wood grown on your own property.

I'm not sure about this, certain that was the case for a BSL application, but Woodsure seem ok with it as long as you are not selling it, so hence we are BSL Producer Traders, but Woodsure Self Supplier Acredted (because we do not sell it.)

Ive set fire to a fair heap today, I just can't see you would ever pass an audit for a hairy pile of brash, even if it was the work of storm Eunice, and totally sustainable, because if I clear up one lot the wind regenerates the mess. Do I sound slightly pee'd off with the whole situation? How long have you got...

I agree.

Most of my fuel is arb logs tipped FOC by local lads.

Been advised so long as you know who it is tipping then should be ok?

After going through it we came to the same conclusion. We’re producer trader on the BSL and have applied to be a self supplier for Woodsure. We’ll find out in due course if we’ve been successful I suppose. Just a shame they owe us and now our BSL has been suspended!

This is difficult! If it is waste then you need a waste licence. If it is virgin timber you need to pay the fine to wood sure if you want to use it in your RHI boiler.

If you are in the same Countryside Stewardship Scheme as us, you are not allowed to remove fallen deadwood! What fun.
Isn't the waste licence just the annual licence all farms have to burn materials? For example a U4 and a T6 licence allow me to collet, chip and burn waste wood.
We buy in the bulk of our fuel and only need to chip fallen waste timber. Would be a travesty if we have to burn it outside because of a paperwork issue.

Its all total bulls**t that you can easily do without unless you have anything to do with RHI either to use yourself or to sell to RHI customers. Then its tough and you are well and truly scuppered. Its not helped by Woodsure also being involved with BSL as well as the policing of the ready to burn rules which again are total bulls**t that you dont have to be concerned about so long as you only do wood sales in excess of 2m3 and supply the magic approved letter to the customer.

It says not to record branches etc as waste, can you put fallen timber in the other section

looks like Woodsure have caved in, and extended the deadline until 1st June 2022 based on high call volumes and lack of staff due to Covid. More like a couple of staff on the phones realised the sh!t they've caused and wondering how they might backpedal out of the crisis they've gone and caused for us all.

I'm classed as a Self-Supplier for BSL, with a 40kW log boiler burning farm windblown timber and buying in to top up. It is non-domestic because it heats the annex next door. What am I paying Woodsure for?
Almost identical situation, registered on the RHI since 2013, 50kw Guntamtic, House & Annex, harvest all our wood from two small woods going mad trying to register with Woodsure. We are pretty much convinced that we will end up out of the RHI. I have no idea why we should be paying Woodsure and BSL.

Bit of advice for all. Don't ask Woodsure a question they can't answer. The only option then open to them appears to be to say you need an audit. An organisation that is incapable of saying, "yes, you have a point that doesn't make sense, let me look into it and get back to you" is a pointless organisation. They clearly haven't thought this nonsense through.

We had a telephone audit last week by Woodsure! Complete waste of time. They were meant to send me an email for me to go through a questionnaire but still not received it!

Inept organisation registered and paid last week 31.5.2022 received an email yesterday at 2.30 pm could I provide evidence of payment by 5.00 pm! Didn’t read emails until 7.00pm after walking round Cereals all day. Another NRoSO fiasco.
