Box Profile roofing sheets

I have a shed I am looking to put a box profile roof onto. A couple questions for those in the know, looking at say 20yr life span but trying to not over spend and storing cars inside , whats the best sheet covering? paint coated or plastic coated?
I was going to put a membrane underneath the sheets for condensation but see you can get sheets with a drip stop coating underneath, are these any good? TIA

If you can afford it then use an insulated panel.

The anti-con coating only really works if you have good airflow, the idea is the moisture is sill formed but is held in the material, then with good airflow it is dried out before it drips. Ventilated eaves and ridges is the correct way to use anti-con sheeting.

I have listed some details below regarding the different coatings, so if anybody is interested in steel sheeting, you have all the information to browse.

Galvanised Steel

Plain galvanised steel has an expected lifespan of 8 - 12 years, but as most of you will know, galvanised steel can last a lot longer, especially if painted once it has weathered.

Galvanised steel can be supplied in a few different specifications ranging from Z140g up to Z275g depending on the coil supplier. It is recommended to use a Z225g or Z275g for outside use.

Polyester Painted Steel

Polyester painted steel has an expected lifespan of 10 - 15 years. A standard 25µm polyester coating is made up of 5µm of primer and 20µm of paint coating.

With the polyester paint coating it can scratch relatively easy, so you do need to be careful when handling the sheets.

The substrate steel is normally a Z225g or Z275g galvanised steel, so if you do scratch the coating there is still a galvanised coating below.

Plastisol PVC Steel

Plastisol PVC steel has an expected lifespan of 15 - 25 years depending on the location the steel is being used (inland or coastal) and the colour chosen. A standard 200µm plastisol pvc coating is made up of 5µm of primer and 200µm (+/- 5µm) of plastisol coating.

With the plastisol pvc coating it is more durable than the polyester paint coated and is more suited in harsh environments, but you can still scratch the coated if not handled with care.

The substrate steel is normally a Z225g or Z275g galvanised steel, so if you do scratch the coating there is still a galvanised coting below.

I have been reading the comments regarding plastisol pvc coatings peeling. Depending on the coil supplier, the specification of the steel coil and the environment the sheeting is being used will affect to coatings. Plastisol will eventually peel at the end of the sheet, which is called cut edge corrosion, normally it will be no more than 10% of the sheet and is more of an aesthetical appearance than a substrate failure. Most plastisol coatings have an operating temperature of 60°c which with the way the UK weather is changing we may see these temperatures on our roofs in years to come.

10 Year Product

TATA and Arcelor Mittal are just two of the coil suppliers that offer 10-year products. TATA steel is called GP and Arcelor is called Solano 10; both of these are normally a Z225g galvanised substrate.

20 Year Product

Arcelor Mittal offer a 20-year product which is called Solano 20, this is normally a Z275g or equivalent substrate.

25 Year Product

TATA steel offers a 25-year product which is called TATA LG, this is normally a Z275g or equivalent substrate.

30 Year Product

Arcelor Mittal offer a 30-year product which is called Solano 30, this is a Galfan ZA265 substrate.

40 Year Product

TATA steel offer two 40-year products which are HPS Ultra (Scintilla plastisol) and Prisma (Paint coated), this is a Galvalloy substrate. Arcelor also offer a 40-year product which is Granite HDXtreme.

Some suppliers will offer a 10-year product due to pricing which is absolutely fine if the pricing is the issue, but if the customer hasn't asked or the supplier hasn't mentioned it you might think you are being supplied a 20 / 25-year product.

As you can see the above information is only based on two coil suppliers, you also have Posco, Dongkuk, Dongbu, SSAB (Swedish Steel), Marcegaglia ect.... that can offer different coatings or substrates depending on your requirements.

Eventually the UK will follow other European countries and only use a paint coated steel. Painted coatings do have benefits as paint coatings do have a higher operating temperature, they have a better fire rating due to the chemicals in the plastisol coatings and they are less likely to peel but the negative is they do scratch easier than a plastisol coating.

SSAB Mica BT

We have been supplying SSAB Greencoat Mica BT as an optional coating as this has a higher operating temperature at 100°c and a 40-year life expectancy*. This is a 30µm paint coating on a Z275g galvanised substrate and is also ecofriendly due to the coating being made from Swedish rapeseed oil.

* Depending on the location the steel is being used (inland or coastal).
