They definitely did say that the money from bps would be the same if not more if we left
The pot they say is still the same now but it appears to be only 20% of what bps pays and the uplands are getting significantly less than the better land for whatever reason
You can get just as much as now but it comes with restrictions and do you trust them anyway ?

When i read the small print i thought it said something like '' the pot for agriculture will remain the same-''

It said nothing about it going to the same recipients--- and it was pretty obvious to me that govt wanted to wean the industry off subs.....feeding a bit of cash to the support industry is just their way of trying to soften the blow

Quite agree but what I can’t understand is that there are actually people out there who don’t see through him and think he’s great.
There are lots of them!
I thought I must be wrong about him and he must have something about him when he got elected.
But, the first thing he does after winning the election, Brexit yet to ‘get done’ etc, is to fly off to Mustique for bloody Christmas.
It wasn’t until Rory Stewart, an actual politician I trust, said in an interview “well of course I loathe and detest Boris Johnson, a truly terrible man” as though it was the most natural thing in the world to say, did I feel better.

Difficult to analyse results of this poll, but we've....

  • 32% "stick head in sand"
  • 33% "other"
  • 10% increase production
  • 17% decrease production
I'm going to guess the 17% will use stewardship or let land out to the 10% who want to increase production. Those 10% will have to pitch their rental offer at or above Stewardship rates.

One third sticking head in sand. Carry on as before. Problem is, that's all many can do. Hope.

I hope DEFRA's gamble pays off, and ag doesn't fail. SFI barely covers costs, so only way I can see farmers surviving is if price of food increase, and if we continue down path with free trade deals then that might put a lid on prices.

What am I going to do on my farm. Most of our machinery has some longevity if necessary, so we'll have to make do and mend. i.e. stop spending.

We've some cattle on B&B, and numbers look like slowly increasing, so will continue with that, although cost of building new housing is becoming prohibitive to expansion.

We have a good chunk of diversified income for one full time person. Some of that income is at a higher £/hr than other work, so we'll endeavour to get more of the high value work and do less of the lower value work.

Many on this thread have commented diversification shouldn't be used to prop up the farming business.fair enough, but if you can earn more money with the diversification, it lowers the risk of your business failure, and makes you more money, then (inheritance tax allowing) I'd have no problems putting while farm into Stewardship and concentrating on the diversification. e.g. Why would you farm for £15/hr if you can make £30/hr from non-ag.

If it’s true what they say that bps ends up in the hands of the retailers or our suppliers with the profits on most farms being minimal then it would be a good guess that there should be some adjustment in values especially in the farm gate direction

It’s regular income that’s needed and your pigs will give you that

There’s grants on sheds and cattle handling gear at the moment

I detest Johnson - absolutely hate the man, us farmers in the uplands are going to be sent back to the dark ages along with a lot of local businesses that rely on us, all at the hands of Johnson and his outright shameful lies & promises for his own political gain that failed anyway….. A truly terrible terrible man.
Just a proper C**T

Aye, but as Hilly says they’re all the same.
Johnson is gone but still what was started whilst he was in power is still in place, no one has said no, that wasn’t a good idea we’re not going to do that, and whilst Jiohnson as the top man gets the flak directed at him, does anyone really believe he was solely responsible for everything implemented whilst he was PM
They’re all in it together or they’d change things
