Poverty in Italy hits new high despite economic recovery

Story by Reuters

ROME (Reuters) - The number of people living in poverty in Italy rose in 2023 to its highest level in about a decade, data showed on Monday, despite an economic rebound since COVID-linked restrictions were eased.

Those living in "absolute poverty" - who were unable to buy essential goods and services - rose to 5.75 million, or 9.8% percent of the population, national statistics bureau ISTAT reported. That's up marginally from 9.7% in 2022 and the highest since the current data series began in 2014. With the exception of a dip in 2019, poverty has risen steadily from 6.9% in 2014, when ISTAT's data series began.

Germany's economic gloom deepens with cut to growth forecast

BERLIN, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The German government expects the economy to grow 0.2% this year, far less than a previously forecast 1.3%, as weak global demand, geopolitical uncertainty and persistently high inflation dent hopes for a swift rebound.

Europe's largest economy shrank by 0.3% in 2023, making it the world's worst performing major economy

The UK has around 12 million people in absolute poverty.
Just to put your nonsense in perspective.
Italians are doing much better than brexit Britain.

It's kind of funny, a few people have been trying to tell us on this forum for years that Brexit is terrible. But do you notice how it's always how bad our country is sinking since Brexit? How bad things have got? How polls show everyone wants rejoin, despite no one ever hinting towards pro EU candidates in bi-elections and protest numbers ever dwindling in real life?

Do you notice how they never try to tell us how much benefit there is to being inside the EU? I mean of course FOM comes up as if not filling out a landing card on the descent into your holiday destination means anything, and of course they try Erasmus, ignored by a third of students who travelled abroad in the year before Brexit, you know the young people who us oldies have denied so much?

Show us how an average EU citizen (factory workers, checkout operators, teachers, delivery drivers, etc) has gained any advantage over their Non-EU developed world counterparts over the nearly 30 years we were in the EU. And where you can show such a significant advantage, show that EU membership was directly responsible.

They can’t do it. Why? Because EU membership has not benefitted the average citizen. If it had, the remainers/rejoiners would be shouting it from the rooftops. That they are not, says it all.

The EU is the world's youngest religion. Believed in by the gullible, beneficial only to those at the top, mired in lies, self contradiction and utterly pointless.

There are 14 EU EEA countries that are vastly better off than the UK on a GDP per capita basis.
If that isn't a benefit I don't know what is.
UK GDP per capita declined last year.
Or are you going to deny it again?

Are you having a laugh. I would say nearly every country in the EU has benefited in one way or another with the exception of the odd few that have managed to mismanage their own economies, even then the EU has been there to help bail them out.

The idea that expansion of the EU eastward made no difference is so bonkers it's the oddest brexit take I've seen so far.
It was a triumph of British diplomacy.
That led to huge success.
All influence like that is lost now though.
Shameful really.
