to start with test to see if you have twelve volts, on the live side of the solinoid, if you dot then its likely a battery or connection issue.

if there is twelve volts on the solinoid, check for voltage on the exciter wire with the key in the "start" position (not the the "run" position) if theres not any voltage here then you have a connection issue or faulty key switch.

Also check the safety interlock circuits ie. clutch safety switch. seat sensor, and cutter engagement switchs all could be possibly faulty resulting in the symptoms you descibe......simply bypass them with a length of wire to to test them.....if the machine runs with one or the other bypassed thats your faulty componant.
