Bulk grazing options

So......were all in a bit of a pickle with the weather.

I want to plant something 20th September, to graze in feb, march and April. Then the same paddocks be put back into kale/turnips for aug pick. Then back into a reseed.

So what to plant in September,
Turnips?
Kale?
Westerwold?
Forage rye?

It will be used to aid on off grazing as soon as needed in feb, and trashing the paddock wont be a worry.

Are you following grass, Stubble Turnips & Hybrid Kale (too late for Kale) would be a good break. Getting late in February though to make the best use of them though.

Forage Rye with an inclusion of Westerwolds would be ideal. I can see Forage Rye selling out very quickly by the amount of recent orders.

We're looking at grazing winter oats if I can get it in quick, dam site cheaper than Rye.

My first thought was a winter cereal but was worried I'd be laughed at but you're there to back me up! Would there be a prospect of regrowth if it was backfenced? Then wholecrop in July, then stubble turnips.......

Always did it until 20 years ago when we stopped grown corn.

Had a price for rye £650tn so we’ve gone with oats for our greening cover crop, I was hoping to get a cut before the 15th of October wether I’m allowed to do that I don’t know.

Irg will grow at lower temperatures so more likely get an early cut next spring plus you should get a cut this autumn.
Plus it should last a couple of years if you want to leave it down
I maybe wrong but @Great In Grass should put me right

That’s ok then, that confirms my thoughts, Dad wanted to plant westerwolds but I ordered and drilled IRG but told him it was westerwold. Was driest seed bed I have ever seen when drilled on Wednesday but 14mm of rain and still raining should hopefully set them off.

If you were wanting rapid growth what about a spring cereal mixed with IRG? Spring oats would grow quick. Graze off then left with grass.

Never done this later than June but just a thought.

We have stopped using westerwolds as we tend to find it can get very strong and run to head quickly. Our grass seed guy was saying weeks ago that there has been a huge amount of westerwolds sown this year and that seed was liable to be in short supply.
