My agro (Agrovista) tells me to use companion gold, is there a better/cheaper alternative?
There's lots of alternatives.

Gly fast
Strada
Sparkler
Spryte aqua

That's the main ones my man advises, different ones for different jobs. I don't know how much companion gold is in comparison but some of these are more expensive per litre than glyphosate.

Spryte aqua is not for killing weeds !!! Neither does it or Strada contain Glyphosate ....
I know that!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's an adjuvant/water conditioner for glyphosate, same as companion gold is. That was the question I answered, alternatives for companion gold. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Where's @Brisel when he's needed?

You called? Been away in Suffolk all day and. Only just got back.

I don't remember that. Who posted it please?

I have no qualified basis to comment on whether more modern glyphosate formulations are better or worse than they were in "the good old days." Branded Monsanto products will work quicker - you're paying a premium for a superior version of the same things with lots of wetters, stickers and buffering agents. If you want the best in one bag or can, buy branded.

The cheaper way is to make your own with generic glyphosate and add your own adjuvants such as @Badshot suggested. Companion Gold is the most expensive one I have come across but it is sticky and does drift control as well as making the brew rain fast much quicker.

Whilst I'm tempted to say that the cheapest way of improving efficacy is by using ammonium sulphate and a higher rate of glyphosate, @tw15 made a good point elsewhere about being a bit more careful with this stuff given the recent media scrutiny. A report of a Maximum Residue Limit breach in the news would not help our cause.

Use an adjuvant like Spyte Aqua that does both water conditioning (esp with hard water) and wetting/surfactant. Get your timing right and leave for a minimum of 10 days before putting the combine in if you feel you must use it at all. You won't see any effect on cereals and grasses until after 7 days. Broad leafed plants won't start to show symptoms for 2 weeks post application. Couch or other rhizome weeds need at least 3 weeks.

I'll post up the timing guide for pre harvest glyphosate later tomorrow but I have done this in here recently, though I can't remember which thread it was in. There may be a guide online somewhere - try the Monsanto website.

Azural (Monsanto) label here- https://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/media/1508/azural-2015-mapp16239.pdf
A summary of intervals is-

One interesting point is that the label mentions that you should not attempt to desiccate oilseed rape crops with significant secondary growth, uneven maturity, disease or stress. Surely having secondary growth and uneven maturity, is the main reason you would want to desiccate anyway o_O
