hopefully, its a matter for the boiler manufacturers to get permission from the EA to burn the stuff in smaller boilers. also the expense of dry litter storage and boiler feeding system seems to need a big boiler to cover the costs.

Nigel Joyce is defiantly the man to talk to but the above comment about small farms is correct. They can't get the emissions to pass on smaller boilers (you need a big fire to burn all the gasses)

I thought that this was sorted by the AHVLA? I've got a link to the forms somewhere, I'll try and find it later (y).

From the 15th of July 2014 new regulations came into force that permit the use of poultry manure as a fuel on farms across Europe.

This is great news for the British Poultry Industry as it offers poultry growers improved economics for growing chicken and the event has been covered by the Farmers Weekly, World Poultry and NFU websites.

bhsl's Fluidised Bed Combustion technology is the only approved system under the new regulation 592/2014 covered by EU 1069/2009 legislation which sets out feedstock and emissions compliance.

"The Toploader fuel handing system has been in use by Energy Innovations for several years and the specification used has been developed specifically to suit the handling of chicken litter. The surfaces in contact with the litter are all stainless steel with the walls of the bunkers being fully sealed concrete. All other parts of the top loader are dip galvanised. Similarly, the barn is designed specifically to resist the environmental pressures resulting from the storage of chicken litter in an enclosed building. It is fully sealed and run at a negative pressure to ensure any gaseous emissions from the litter are drawn through the boiler and burnt off at over 85°C. The cladding in the barn is insulated and coated with a resistant coating. All steels are fully galvanised, all purlins are wooden as Z purlins can corrode.

Personnel access is through a sealed changing area with integral showers to avoid risk of any diseases in the litter of the previous crop being transferred to the next crop.

Remote monitoring, including cameras that can view the fuel store and the fire in the furnace together with a full on-going support package contribute to ensuring your plant complies with APHA regulations for the burning of litter."

Would also like to know if anyone is burning poultry litter in boiler. I bought a wood pellet boiler set up couple weeks ago and i am going to try redesign and run it on poultry litter from large broiler houses have some plans and ideas in my head but until i set it up wont know if it works.

As I see it, your biggest hurdles to overcome are litter produces quite a lot more ash than wood.

You're incinerating waste, requires a permit and the burn temperature must be 850*c+
This requires a pre heat burner.

Also you get a lot of fly ash, which will require a filter in the exhaust and also lime treatment of the flue gases to neutralise acids.

Think it needs to be WID compliant if your burning poultry manure.

I'm wondering if poultry litter is pressed into pellets can it be spread on grass as fertiliser. Would the pellets still be a desease risk for botulism etc.

something to consider is solar focus boilers, they have a burn temperature of well over 1000 deg and a flue gas temp of under 150 deg usually, also the eta 350kw model, it has a burn temp of about 950 deg and also a very respectable flue gas temp, it has a walking step grate assy, it also has egr to regulate the burn temp so you could get even more if required by restricting the egr.
