Buying off eBay

There’s an item of machinery I’m interested in on eBay...it’s at the other end of the country, the piece of machinery is only a year old so there’s a chance it could have finance on it
Is there a way of me being able to find out if it’s free of finance
Also it worries me about paying for it and it not arriving! I can wire the money when it arrives no problem but obviously the seller isn’t going to be keen in it going 300 miles without payment up front...

Mark Watson has wagons up and down regular so he could move it for you and possibly pay for it when he collects it. I don’t know about owed finance on gear. If it’s an implement it would be harder for any comeback rather than something with a log book I would have thought

You can ask the seller if there's any outstanding finance on it ,,that they should be able to tell you without Ebay kicking of in their usual manner ,Exactly where it is they cant tell you ,well they could but they would end up with a weeks warning .
If you pay via paypal the payment is secure or are they requesting Bacs ,,if so avoid

only safe way is to collect it yourself and pay for it at time of collection, or get a haulier you trust who will let you know when he is their to collect and its safe to transfer money, don't know about the finance but im sure others on here will.

Second that for mark. He collected a cnc plasma cutter for me 18 months back from Newcastle, when he collected it he went through it and did a full check before loading to make sure it was as was described. Top chap. Very polite drivers too.

I have the blokes number and I’ve spoken to him, the deal would be done outside of eBay...its the guy I’m worried about...I’m sure he’s perfectly legit...but he might not be...

If you can pay by debit card then you’re covered by distance selling act if you pay over the phone. 7 days the day after it arrives to back it. Bacs a little more tricky. In that case I would if you use Mark Watson pay him then he can inspect and pay on collection.

I assume its worth a few £, if you cant afford to loose it then make the effort to view it.

It could be the wisest 300 miles you have ever driven. You can tell a lot by meeting the seller in my opinion

travel 300 miles to see. You would be daft to buy a newish machine from someone you don't know, how do they want paying ? You read all the time about scams, it seems suspicious, like above, if you trust the haulier do that, if chap wants the money upfront, don't do it.

Personally, I would check the person selling out, how much info can you find on him?or her? Most of us who are in buisness and established for some time leave a big trail on the Internet. Start by googling their telephone number, Vat no turns up in a database, with the trading name and adress. Therefore if you get someone long established in buisness, if there was a problem later on ,chances are you would find them.
