Calf Dry Coating with Bald Patches

Those aren't typical lice-rubbing spots. Her temp is only at the high end of normal.

Agree with @johnspeehs get them outside, fresh air and daylight (even on a cloudy day) works miracles. If she's mooing a lot she may be hungry, she's a stonker of a calf! But she doesn't look thin by any means.

If they are easy to get back in you could try feeding mom a few kgs of calf rough mix once or twice a day to get some milk and energy in her. It won't take long for the calf to discover it too - very sweet smelling. Then turn them back out, grass is much cleaner and healthier for a calf than being kept inside.

I don;t think I'd be jagging her with anything else - she's had it all.
Thank you all. Would giving calf rough mix be better than putting heifer on a dairy blend? They are all out during the day. Will get them out at night now too.

Had a local farmer and his wife check her over today. All good news. He thinks there is nothing wrong with the calf (was maybe constipated yesterday) and he says the heifer is milking good.

Plan is to allow calf access to a pail of water and they've said if she does get sick for whatever reason to call them to check on her again. It feels really good having that backup support.

Well , looking at that photo @sjewart , a calf that has developed as much muscle as that and has fleshed as much as that calf looks in your photo , I'd be amazed if there's a thing troubling that calf. The signs are that that is a very healthy calf.

Agree as stated earlier that the calf may have picked up ringworm.

Thank you charcoalwally. My farmer friends that checked her over today didnt think it was ringworm. Im wondering if she's had a reaction to one of the jags she's been given.

Tonight i see more hair loss patches on the calf. They are doted about in random places. Spot on hurdy bone, spot at front of shoulder, few spots on both sides of the calf. The cow licks this calf incessantly - could this be the cause? If so, how can i stop it??

I wouldn't worry about it, it wont be the licking, it will be fine, take a chill pill, that calf is looking great and the hair will grow back, id be very surprised if it came to anything.
Thanks. Just wondering if anything will help it regrow the hair or stop it from losing more. No be great trying to sell a baldy calf. [emoji31]

Also when i touched a new bald patch tonight it was soaking wet. Either the calf is washing it or its the mum licking it. I suppose it must feel irritated or sore.

If its had A'bs it can lead to hair loss but it will grow back you wont be able to stop it losing it I would think but sure it might only ever be small patches., I gave mine multi vitamins but never seen it make much difference, take a bottle of chill pills, I would think the hair will soon grow back.

Thank you johnspeehs. Im not sure where this hair loss is gona stop but there are more patches appearing daily. She rubs a lot on gates and one patch looks a bit red - would hate for it to get infected. Hence why i wanted to know what would stop it. I guess il have to just chill out!
