4 week old calf born outside slowly losing hair, lost 10% now. Managed to get mum and her in today so rung vet and he will come tomorrow I thought photosensitisation but vet said unlikely in such a young calf as not eating things that trigger it. any ideas? skin quite scurfy but 10 other calves in same field unaffected.

Could it be the mother licking it so the hair falls out. Had a couple of calves this year that had scours so were lying down and mother just stood there licking their heads and other parts of their body took a while to work out what was going on.

Had this in an older calf a couple of years ago, went completely bald. Calf was not suckling (ie machine fed) and had just been weaned, never really got to a definite answer despite vet inspection. Might possibly have been a reaction to brief high temperature (it had had pneumonia). Skin layer sort of cracked (like clay cracking) and hair came out in clumps with this dead skin attached. Went very greasy and glossy and scurfy. Is yours itchy ie is is scratching? Ours was, so our main concern was it getting scratched and infected, used a lanolin based udder cream to keep skin supple on vet's advice. Its hair regrew over about a 6 week cycle and heifer has been fine since.

Sounds very much like this, my vet has discounted parasites. It is not itchy at all and it is affecting every part of his body vet has taken biopsy and sent it away so we may learn something in about a week or so......hopefully.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
