Caravan tyre advice

Here is a question for the more mechanically minded on the forum.
Coming home from Carfest on the M6 this afternoon we blew a tyre on our twin axle caravan, didn’t notice soon enough and have buggered the alloy. Found a replacement at a caravan breakers tonight, exactly the same pattern sold as a 185r14 whilst our wheel is carrying 175x65r14 tyres. Will it be the same wheel or a different size? Tia.

Best solution will be to pour a gallon of petrol over the fecking thing and setting fire to it.

You will no longer be a danger to other road users or a nuisance in areas subject to tourist infestation.

But you will have to find something else to talk about to your friends (if any) and work colleagues.

One of the funniest quotes of tff (along with Fendt’s doing 29mpg)
6 weeks ago I would’ve wholeheartedly agreed with this sentiment ( 3 years ago the op would’ve as well)
But times change, things move on. We’re going to a festival in a few weeks, We were there last year in a tent, where it rained solidly for 36hours. Our good friends were there in a trailer tent ( to those uneducated people, it’s a tent on a trailer, so it allows rain rain water to pass underneath into the neighbouring tent (ours) ).
So when said ‘good friends’ bought a cheap caravan for the festival this year, against all of my principles ( anti pykey and Jeremy Clarkson esq dislike) we too have bought a cheap caravan.
This has eliminated the chance of ‘friendly’ pee taking from friends while rain water flows underneath and gale force winds blows neighbouring tents away.
I do hang my head somewhat in shame at the thought of my hypocrisy of towing a caravan after slagging them off for years while following them along roads, but after our first jaunt out in it ( the field behind our silage shed where no traffic was held up) where we had a few beers and barbecue with the kids sleeping in it and us in the house, I’m starting to warm to the concept and no doubt in a few weeks time at the festival it’ll be my best idea ever (even though it was the wife’s, my idea being chuck a couple of mattresses in the back of the graham edwards)
So when we do adventure out onto the public highway for the first time,I would like to apologise to car (and possibly tractor) drivers for holding them up on their journeys and if I’ve a long tailback behind I’ll pull over if I can, but if I’ve got wagons behind they can sit and wait behind as I’ve never seen a wagon pull over to let a tailback of cars get by.

Back to the op’s question, 185 instead of 175 tyres should be fine, they’re wider so it’ll just make the caravan look cooler :cool:(y)(y)

My fendt will do 29mph easy even 34 mph on a nice smooth private road. What's so funny about that? It's 29mpg I struggle to do

Tbh its a bit rich anybody from the farming sector moaning about caravans holding up traffic considering most of us do that for a living with cattle trailers, tractors and livestock themselves but caravans being cool.....

Why do you need to hold anybody up with a caravan? Borrowed my mates Merc ML to collect son’s caravan from YPV at the Royal Welsh, had to watch the speed as 70 mph was no problem, power is the key!

A 185 r 14 would be a bigger diameter than a 175 65 14 and not be mixed as it would carry more weight and probably destroy its self.
It is reccomended and soon to become law for HGV's that tyres are no more than 6 years old so if one has blown out I would check the date stamp on them and renew them all if they are old or showing any cracks between the tread pattern.
Single axle caravans use commercial van tyres as they carry more weight and car tyres are not up to the job but a twin axle should be alright with normal car tyres.
As for the wheel it should be the same width and will be fine.
Hope this helps.

My farm machinery has never tipped over on the M5 or A30 causing traffic chaos for hours (If you've ever been stuck in a jam watching the police clear every single item from a motorway after a caravan flips and disintegrates, you'll know what I mean) and it can be reversed more than 10 ft without jackknifing and becoming jammed on any road of 2 lanes or less. Nor do I bore non farmers rigid with talk of my latest purchase or where I'm going with it next weekend.

In fact, it is well known that the Good Friday Agreement to start the NI peace process only came about because MI5 found out that McGuinniss (Martin, not Paddy) and Adams were planning to stop the bombings and get members of the IRA to take Caravanning holidays on the mainland instead. Of course, the Govt had to bend under such an evil threat.

Can you not just put a new tyre that matches the rest onto that rim though?

Very rarely get stuck behind a caravan, tractors on the other hand.......

Yes you can but what I am trying to say is that although the other tyres look to have good tread check carefully as one has already blown out.

Very good point, I didn’t know that age was a thing with tyres until I read up about it last night. My van is 7 year old and it is recommended swapping tyres on a caravan at 5 years so when I get a new wheel I intend to replace all 4 ( they are not a dear tyre anyway)
