I heard yesterday (from someone who heard from someone else, so classify this as hearsay) that Bob Jones's family still owned the land under the mart, which Bob had leased to the council to built a mart, which they rented back to BJP! That's why there's this delay now as the council and the family are negotiating about the value of the land.

Council built on the old site so might have had to build a new one.

BJP, the company responsible for Carmarthen Mart, denies closing the site, although it was not open on Wednesday. Meanwhile Carmarthenshire County Council, which owns the site, has confirmed that they have not renewed the BJP lease for the site. Councilor David Jenkins, Carmarthenshire's executive board member, said: "We can only confirm that the lease with BJP has not been renewed, we have no further comment to make." But local farmers have long been unhappy with BJP, claiming they are not paid after selling animals there. According to one of the directors, Jonathan Morgan, farmers will be paid. He added that staff were at the mart on Wednesday morning even though the site was closed to the public, and that the company was going through a period of restructuring after another director resigned. Brian Walters Image caption Brian Walters says farmers take their stock for sale elsewhere including across the border in England The fact that the site did not open as usual on Wednesday was no surprise to Ffynnonddrain dairy farmer Brian Walters. "We have seen the signs for years, where stock is getting smaller then, and farmers are going elsewhere to sell stock," he said. "If we took stock there on this, let's say, the last year, we used to get paid the week after. But if we don't collect the money, the money could be a month before coming. " Over the border He said many local farmers now take their livestock to Whitland, Newcastle Emlyn or Llanybydder. "What also worries me more is that dairy cows go over the border to be sold in English markets. "It's very sad that they have to take stock out of west Wales where we have a caliber mart in Carmarthen standing idle." BJP says it hopes to resolve the situation so that it can reopen as soon as possible. But many farmers say they will not return while the company runs the mart. "No one has any faith in the company that is present," said Brian Walters. "The stock has gone elsewhere to be sold now, and it will be very difficult for someone to bring back stock there."
