Case 1494

Hi

I am restoring a case 1494 hydrashift,I have two questions that I wonder if anyone might help me with.Firstly I want to put new liners and pistons in.My question is will I need an extractor to remove the liner and a tool or something to replace them.My second question is about gear selection. The manual gear lever on the floor to the right with which you select 1 2 3 and reverse is very difficult to find neutral and hard to get out of gear without getting into another gear.Is the problem in the gearbox or the gearbox cover/selectors.Thanking anyone who replies in advance.Rob.

Hello,

No liners, pistons run in the bore.

I'm not sure about your gear stick problem... Are you being a little heavy handed, because the linkage is stiff, or perhaps the clutch is not fully letting go?

This is spot on

And the suggestions I would of said

The bores hone them out and measure
If badly worn they can be machined and a new dry type sleeve pressed it we have had a couple done over the years.

The clutch does it bite upon setting off near the bottom if so adjust/bleed

Also oil level and grease the linkage where the ball goes through the cab and ball on the end off gear stick
Also cab mounts have they collapsed worth a look too

The gear box will most likely be either the ball on the end of the lever or the brass selector forks worn, or the plastic ball worn where it goes through the cab floor, or the ball socket that the lever goes into.

The latter 2 are easy to check, 4xbolts around the bottom of the gear lever and it pulls out. Looking through the hole will reveal the ball socket on the arm that goes into the gearbox, the other ball is on the gear lever that you've just removed. It has 2 plastic cups around it that wear

I would suggest it is possible the brake on the clutch has worn out and there is pressure on the gears. Do you have the same problem when the engine is stopped?
Hi,thanks for your reply. It is the same whether the engine is running or not.Do you know whether that engine has dry liners or a cast block that you have to review,it is a AD4/55T engine serial no 220101 1141 4428 Cheers Rob

Engine out , rebore and fit oversize pistons.
Your cylinder head will usually need new valves , seats and possibly guides.
Can you twist the gearstick any - if so then the pin in the ball on the plate where it goes through the cab floor is broke.
Could also be the roll pin in the selector fork snapped. Take the gearstick out of the cab. look down through the hole in floor and you will see 4 bolts holding selector onto gearbox. Undo these and crawl up in between gearbox and cab at the back of tractor and remove selector. There is a roll pin or possibly a solid interference fit pin holding the selector to the shaft that has snapped. very common. Make sure the tractor is in neutral before removing selector housing to aid alignment when putting back together.

Some of those brass selector forks had the strength of a block of cheese, abnormal wear caused by numpty driver not changing gear properly...
