Case 885 Brakes

Are both side locking up individually when you split/unlatch the brakes? It is possible that when there is a leak say on the right hand piston that the latched pedals will go to the floor but on splitting the left brake will work individually. Due to the action of the balancing valve.

They both lock when working them individually but you have to use considerable effort to do that, there is no leaks in the system because the pedals remain firm latched or unlatched, I notice the left pedal travels further than the right so I'm going to look at the adjustment set up at the master cylinders

You know what, we're all beating around the bush here.
If as you say you've got 400 psi up to 1000 psi with a gauge tee'd into the brake pipe at the back axle with a good pedal & yet very poor brakes then you have an issue in the brakes within the axle.
You have more than enough pressure to lock the wheels.

It's a long time since I was in a 885 back end. But is it possible that it can be incorrectly assembled?? Or something missing altogether? New discs not the right thickness? I just can't remember off hand. Will dig out he manual and have a look.

I had one years ago with a similar problem, turned out to be the operator was adding Molyslip additive to the transmission as it had a noisy diff but it affected the brake grip badly just like this one but e can discount Molyslip because I have changed the oil so many times also new discs, but the symptom was exactly the same

Sounds like you might have to unfortunately re visit the brakes.

I just had a quick on line and there does not appear to be any difference in the brake discs across the whole IH Doncaster tractors from the 74 series to the last Case CX series.

Surely if it were a air issue I would have a soft spongy brake pedal, I've not got that I have a very firm pedal but a long travel but when it gets there it's firm

Have the brake pistons have come to the end of their travel too much wear on piston and stationary separator plate ? Has somebody skimmed them in the past so could be reused ?

If it's the same as the 674 there will be a disc between the master cylinders which is held out when the the pedals are right up. When it's out it allows one side of the independent brakes to be used as the port is blocked by a poppet valve. When both pedals are pressed the disc is allowed to move right in to its housing which unseats a poppet valve and allows the pressure to be equalised between both master cylinders for equal braking. Check the disc is out when the pedal/s are up and right in when braking with both pedals. If you have good pressure at the trumpet housings I doubt this will be your problem. I would be looking in the trumpet housings at the brakes?

I thought there was a more recent thread on this but I can't find it. IH 885xl 2wd brakes always worked really well. Now one pedal is completely spongy and whatever you do won't provide any braking. The other one will provide braking after pumping. Any thoughts please. Thanks

i had a thread recently...anyhoo you could just latch the brakes together 😗 .....not as if massive speed is going to be an issue😁
