Case IH 956XL PTO won’t engage

Hi all, just collected my 956XL which I drove home with to Thirsk (about 40 miles) and I’m very pleased with. She is an 89 with only 5900 hours on. Last owner had had it for over 10 years and only used it for a link box and log splitter. He had the clutch, hand brake, all fluids and filter changed about 300 hours ago. Cab interior is perfect, wheels arches have the usual rust which I’m going to replace respray along with the rest of the tractor, fit a new seat then she’ll be perfect.

now the problem, I can’t get the PTO lever at the back of the seat to move, it’s stuck solid. I don’t really know how the PTO works on these (our other tractor is MF 3080 which is hydraulic) so have I got the other levers in the wrong position, does it need to be in gear to work? The previous owner didn’t use it but he does thinks the guy who did the clutch did the pto clutch at the same time. Any help much appreciated.

I could do with a bit more road speed. The front tyres need changing The back ones are good if a little perished. What’s the biggest size I can go upto and any idea of what speed I would get? Like to be somewhere around early 20’s.

I only have 17 acres and we’re just trying to use 10 of them to grow grass, to hay bale for my sons girlfriends horse the sell what she doesn’t need. We’ve also bought a mower, Tedder and MF conventional baler. I’m a builder not a farmer but me and my sone have a love of restoring machinery so any help would be appreciated.

we’ve just finished restoring our 3080 which was a rotten wreck when we got it but is now nearly show quality. Going to do the same with the 956.

I’ll post pictures of the old girl one I have some, was too excited when I got back last night to take any.

Both of our old girls have a home brew D handle through the cab floor to snatch the pto into gear. We've never been great at replacing things that aren't up to the job!

you want to be careful you don't get it into land drive pto by mistake..... it can Cause some damage if you have an implement on the back,

The pto lever at the back of the right hand side of the seat is a linkage, not a cable, somewhere underneath between gearbox and fuel tank where the linkage goes into the casting there is a spring loaded detent , a ball bearing with a spring behind it and it seizes , force it in with a screw driver and lubricate , if you force the lever in the cab you end up breaking the aluminium housing it The lever pivots in

Hi thanks for all the advice.

its electric 4WD

PTO sorted just sized up linkage where the cable attaches to the gearbox lever.

I agree with Flat 10, if I change both front and rear’s by the same ratio I can’t see why it would cause any damage it’s not as though it’s going to be doing 100mph I’m only thinking another 2-3 mph. Just like to be able to do a good 20. Spoken to a few dealers and they all said to fit bigger tyres. Could just do with knowing what I should go for.

Got a few other jobs sorted today and found a few more that need doing. It’s leaking fluid out of the joint on the brake master cylinder so looks like that will need a seal kit or replacement. Found them on line at £400 so hope I’ll be able to try a seal kit first.

Hydraulic tank is a bit rusty and weeping around the bottom connection so might have to take that off and repair it at some stage.

I’ll post some photos in next couple of days, again thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

If it’s on standard 16.9r 38s and 12.4r28s I think you can go to 13.6r28 and 18.4r38 without changing rims but check first. If as it sounds it isn’t 40k they are very slow. You have checked splitter is in high?

What size tyres is it on? 16.9r38 and 12.4r28 were standard if I remember correctly. 18.4r38 and 13.6r28 were fitted to the 1056 and should squeeze onto the standard rims. Going bigger will need different rims.

Might need to have a look at the brake discs on her as the housings are difficult to get now and damage easily when the discs wear out.................................................................................

Hi yes splitter is in high and yes on those tyres. No it’s not a 40k been told it’s too much hassle and cost to change it.
